Who were the Sophists?
Sophists are ancient Greek professional
teachers. They made a living by teaching others while traveling from city to city. They thought students should use their time to make themselves better. They also taught things like how to win a debate and how to make good political speeches. Sophists did not believe in mythology influencing people. They also completely rejected the idea of absolute wrong and right. They thought that a wrong for one person could be a right for another.
The ideas of Socrates.
Socrates was one of the critics of Sophists. Socrates was an Athenian sculptor, but his true love was philosophy. Socrates left no writings behind, but what we know about him is from his students writings. He believed that there was an absolute truth and that all correct knowledge was within each and every person.
