Horse racing was one of the many sporting events in the ancient olympics. Horse racing is the most prestigious sport. Owners of the horses were very wealthy, as the horses could take the riders to the arena. The horse races took place in the hippodrome. The course length were about 6 laps around the track. When the owners of the horse wins the race they receive an olive wreath.
Discus
Throwing a discus was an event in the pentathlon. At first the discus was stone. But later on it changed to bronze. Also, after that is changed to lead then iron. At first the only running event was a stadion, which the runners had to run about 180 meters.The winner of the stadion race, gave their name to the olympiad in which he won. Over time more running events were added to the olympics, such as the Diaulos, this is double the distance of the stadion race which is about 360 meters. Also, there were the races Dolichos and Armour these were the long distance races, which required a lot of stamina. The athletes ran the running events naked and also barefoot on the running track. After that the competitors would go to the Altis, a sacred olive garden. The men athletes would give offerings to Zeus, Apollo, Hermes, or Hercules. They would pray for victory in the games. The competitions on that day were running, Boxing, and Wrestling . The afternoon was free for anything, such as exploring Olympia. The most exciting was the Temple of Zeus, considered as the 7 wonders of the ancient world which was the most popular temple in Olympia.
Long jumping
Long jumping part of the pentathlon. In the ancient olympics the athletes used weights, also know as halters which pushed them farther when they jumped. Also, it gave them a steady landing. The runners would run close to the line and jump swinging their arms back, with the weights in their hands to get more force causing them to go further, landing in a sand pit. The sand pit was about 15 meters long. When the athletes jumped, their two feet were together.
