Ancient Rome is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but rarely talked about. Did you know Ancient Rome is located in Italy however the city's boundary changed so many times during all the ancient rulings. Generally Rome ruled all the lands around the Mediterranean Sea. This also included many other surrounding places.
Due to Ancient Rome's location Natural resources were laid on thick. The rich soil of Egypt, North Africa and Sicily provided grain for the entire empire. The level grounds of France and southeastern Europe provided valuable farming space. The lands of the empire was a main source of minerals including Gold, Silver and Copper.
The empire included many types of Romans, so many there was not
an "average roman". The word Roman included all persons who possessed Roman citizenship, regardless of language, race, culture, or place of birth. Latin was the official Ancient Rome language, spoken through out the whole empire.
Ancient Roman family's were larger and close knit. They included a father, mother, children and any married sons family's. Women had no rights but were held in high respect. They looked after the house and were free to travel around the city as they pleased.
Children were taught by parents and household tutors. The boys of the wealthy family's started school at the age of 6. Mothers taught daughters domestic duties and boys became adults at the age of 16 or 17. This is about the age girls married. Parents usually picked who their children would marry.
Houses of an early Roman would consist of a single four sided room called the Atrium( SEE SOURCES 1 AND 2). Later more elaborate house were built by adding more rooms along the sides of the atrium. These rooms served as bedrooms and dining areas. Later wealthy families would add a garden enclosure at the back of the house. These houses were made from concrete.
Romans houses were simply but elegantly furnished. The Romans invented the central heating system but not many could afford this. Water was pumped into the wealthier homes.
Poorer people in farm areas lived in small huts made of sun dried bricks. Poor city people lived all lived in concrete buildings six or seven stories high.
