Andrew Barton Or Banjo Paterson
Andrew Barton or “Banjo” Paterson was born on 17th of February 1864 in Orange, New South Wales. He was the eldest of seven children of his father Andrew Paterson and his mother Rose Isabella. Andrew Barton Patterson always enjoyed playing in the bush and riding horses as a young boy before moving to Illalong. He then received his education at Sydney Grammar School and he received the junior Knox prize at 16 years old.
After Patterson finished his schooling, he then became a solicitor for about ten years followed by a journalist. During his journalism years he wrote his first major poem 'El Mahdi to the Australian Troops' which was published in the bulletin.
