“I shall return” once said by United States 5 star general Douglas Macarthur, when he left the Philippines. Douglas MacArthur was one of the most respected U.S generals ever. Only a handful of people ever get promoted to a 5 star general. He graduated from West Point Academy with the highest academic award offered at the school. Also Douglas was awarded the Metal of Honor. It is the highest award the government offers.
Childhood
Douglas MacArthur was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 26, 1880. His father’s name was Arthur Macarthur. Arthur MacArthur was Lieutenant General of the army. Arthur’s wife’s name was Mary Pinckney Hardy MacArthur, nicknamed “Pinky”. Douglas liked his father, he taught Douglas to shoot guns and ride horses. Pinky always kept a good eye on him and his brothers, so they would never get hurt. The youngest of the three brothers was Douglas. Malcolm was the middle brother. He died of measles, when Douglas was three years old. Arthur was the eldest of the three brothers; Arthur was born on August 1st 1876. Formation
The start of his military career was slow.
At first, he was an engineer officer for 10 years. Then he stopped being an engineer and became the General of Staff of the War Department for four years. Next came World War I, we started off being a major in the army. Then he became Chief of Staff for the 42nd division in the middle of World War I. He also was wounded twice in World War I. Douglas got many rewards for his bravery in the war. At the end of the war, he got promoted to Brigadier General. Accomplishments
Douglas MacArthur had many great accomplishments. In his career, he had many promotions. First, he started off as a junior engineering officer for ten years.
Next, he was selected to be the General of the War Department for four years. After that, he was a Major in the armed forces. During the middle of World War I, he was promoted to Chief of Staff in the 42nd division. Near the end of World War I, he became a Brigadier General. Then he became, the Chief of Staff of the United States Armed Forces. While he was Chief of Staff, the president appointed him Field Marshall of the Philippine Military Forces. When he completed his time as a Field Marshall, he was promoted to the Commander of the United States Armed Forces. By the end of World War II, he was promoted to 5 Star General to the United States Armed Forces. Along with many promotions, Douglas Macarthur received many metals for his skills and bravery in the face of battle. He was rewarded nine different metals in his military career. First, he earned the Order of Rising Son. The Order was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese Government. It is the second most prestigious Japanese decoration. Then, he got the Purple Heart for his bravery. Douglas also received the Bonze Star, for bravery, acts of merit and meritorious service and the Silver Star, for courage in action against an enemy of the United States. In addition, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism in the sky, and the Navy Distinguished Service Metal, for being a responsible Naval Officer. Additionally, he was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Metal, for distinguishing himself through meritorious service to the Government in a position of great responsibility. MacArthur also received the Distinguished Service Metal by risking his life to save others. Finally, he received the highest award in the United States Army, the Metal of Honor, as he went above and beyond the call of duty.
Later years/Death
After World War II, the president of the Untied States dismissed (fired) him from the line of duty. He was dismissed for not obeying some orders from the President. United States was mad at the President for doing so. The President’s popularity went way down after he dismissed Douglas. After he was dismissed, Douglas moved back to the United States from the Philippines. When he arrived in the United States, 500,000 people waited to greet him for his service in World War II. A couple years later, he was put on trial for his dismissal from the armed forces and the Situation in the Far East. People though Macarthur was misusing his powers as a Field Marshall in the Philippines. After his trial, he was asked by his congress “friend’s” to run for president. Douglas MacArthur refused to run for president. But Douglas decided he was going to endorse Robert Taft in his run for president. He delivered speeches for him. Doug also was the keynote speaker at the 1952 Republican National Convention. MacArthur died in Washington D.C on April 5th, 1964 of biliary cirrhosis. The last few years of his life, he was writing his memoirs.
Significance
Douglas MacArthur was a very significant person. He made a big part of history. Without him, America might be very different because the Nazis might have ruled the world. Or if he wasn’t Field Marshall for the Philippines, the Philippines could be a totally different from what it is now. Doug also got a lot of metals for his service in the army. That just show he was good in his military career. MacArthur also got the highest metal that the government offers Untied States soldiers. Plus, he also risked his life for America and in reward got the Metal of Honor. In addition, he was a 5 Star General of the United States Army. Only a hand full of people ever obtains this rank in the army.
