Today in America many people question whether or not college is truly worth the stress, time, and cost it throws on an individual. For certain colleges do not offer what students need specifically for their academic path at the time they are available; do not have them at all. This causes students to “[Take] longer, since they register for fewer courses then they need to stay on track,” which illustrates the difficulty with managing the students’ courses and daily lives (Marcus 144). In which, affects mostly the students who are working part-time jobs, and work schedules are not flexible; making them unavailable for classes. In the article that I read, “Two Years Are Better Than Four”, Liz Addison, expresses her opinion on community colleges, which she believes that the community college system should be regarded as one of America’s uniquely great institutions, not only because community colleges lets students have a place to start their higher education, but also because community colleges is critical to the nation by offering people a network of affordable future, of accessible hope, and an option to dream. Addison firstly refutes Rick Perlstein’s opinion and states “My guess, reading between the lines, is that Mr. Perlstein has never set foot in an American Community College”. Then coupled with the writing that came before this statement, this line sets up Addison’s paper and provides the reader with her thesis “The philosophy of the community college is one that unconditionally allows its students to begin”. And Addison properly concluded her opinion of community colleges towards the end of the essay that the community college really matters to these students, from different backgrounds. What other people don’t tell them is that college is to help build people that can better the community and the world. McCreery writes about how college’s true purpose is to build people that have the education that allows them to survive in the world and be able to think things you that others didn’t not just to make you a big paycheck. “It’s just extremely disappointing and aggravating to have paid all that money and have nothing to show for it other than debt.” proclaimed Michelle Polyakov, an English graduate from Drake University. Polyakov obviously feels that college is not worth the cost and that all someone has to show for the education is debt. College has been deemed, by some, that it is not worth the cost because of the financial loss, the future job security, and the need for “blue collar” jobs. Finances, job security, and the need for manual laborers are all major factors in the debate of college and its cost. The reason being is because not all people are meant to go to college, or their situation just isn’t ideal.
