Andy Warhol Research Paper
On August 6, 1928, Andy Warhol was born as Andrew Warhola to Andrej and Julia Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They were a working class family that stuck close to the roots and traditions of their Eastern European heritage. In 1934 Andy began attending the local Holmes School and took free art classes at Carnegie Institute (now the Carnegie Museum of Art). Andy had an amazing gift for drawing even from a very young age. In addition to drawing, Andy was fascinated by Hollywood cinema and spent much of his time at the local cinema. He also enjoyed taking pictures that he developed by himself in his basement. Through out the years Andy continued to pursue his artistic abilities and became astoundingly famous for them. More than twenty years …show more content…
After graduation Warhol moved to New York city and began to work for Glamour magazine as a commercial artist. He won numerous awards for his work and became one of the most successful illustrators of the 50's. Towards the end of the 50's he began to devote more of his time to painting. His painting style was derived from his childhood love for comic books. This style quickly became known as “Pop Art.” 1962 marked the beginning of Warhol's celebrity status as he released his famous Campbells Soup Can series, which completely changed the direction of the art world. Warhol's Pop Art became the craze of the 60's, people couldn't get enough of it. He began to use this style to do a large sequence of movie stars, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor. Warhol painted his masterpieces in a silver-painted and foil-draped studio named The Factory, located at 231 East 47th …show more content…
By doing this he brought a whole other source of attention to himself from the art critics. The films and videos he created were very different from the Hollywood cinema that he grew up on. They were said to be dark and “underground.” Warhol made near 600 films and near 2500 videos. Included in this are over 500, 4-minute films that feature friends, associates and visitors to The Factory, all considered to Warhol as possessing “star-quality.” In 1968, Andy suffered a nearly fatal gun-shot wound from aspiring playwright and free radical feminist author, Valeria Solanas. He was attacked in front of The Factory and it changed his persona forever. Some say this event pushed Andy further towards being a reclusive individual that caused his behavior to become very peculiar. He became obsessive about documenting his life to an extreme degree. He dictated every activity possible. He even hired interns to transcribe the content of what would amount to over 3,000 audio tapes. Portions of these accounts were published posthumously in 1987 as The Warhol

Pittsburgh as Andrew Warhola. The leading exponent of the pop art movement, Warhol chose his imagery from the world of commonplace objects such as dollar bills, soup cans, soft-drink bottles, and soap-pad boxes. He is variously credited with attempting to ridicule and to celebrate American middle-class values by erasing the distinction between popular and high culture. Monotony and repetition became the hallmark of his multi-image, mass-produced silk-screen paintings: for many of these, such as the portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy, he employed newspaper photographs. He and his assistants worked out of a large New York studio dubbed the "Factory." In the mid-1960s Warhol began making films, suppressing the personal element in marathon essays on boredom. In The Chelsea Girls (1966), a seven-hour voyeuristic look into hotel rooms, he used projection techniques that constituted a startling divergence from established methods. Among his later films are Trash (1971) and L'Amour (1973). With Paul Morrissey, in 1974 Warhol also made the films Frankenstein and Dracula. In 1973, Warhol launched the magazine Interview, a publication centered upon his fascination with the cult of the celebrity. He died from complications following surgery. The Andy Warhol Museum, which exhibits many of his works, opened in Pittsburgh in 1994.…

In the 1960s an art movement known as Pop Art had begun. Pop art was meant to be simple to aid the audience in creating their own interpretations of the pieces. Two of the leading artists were Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Warhol was a fan of women, unlike Warhol, Lichtenstein was inspired by culture; their paintings are both pieces of Pop Art but they are different because Warhol’s paintings are mostly of women and Lichtenstein’s are of famous cartoon characters. The artists used different techniques to catch their viewers attention. Both pieces of art displayed different messages to the viewer. Although both artists used Pop art, they had several differences in their artwork such as one being a real public figure while the other is a…

Andy Warhol founded the art movement called pop art, and his lifestyle and work both mocked and celebrated the world’s obsession with materiality and fame. On one side, his paintings of distorted everyday items and celebrity faces could be seen as a display for what he viewed as a culture consumed with money and being famous. On the other side, his focus on consumer goods and celebrities, and his own fame and fortune, suggest a life in celebration of the aspects of American culture that his work criticized.…

Andy Warhol, was the creative mind that created pop art. Andy Warhol is a Polish American artist that lived during the twentieth century. Mr. Warhol’s paintings focused on the mass production of commercial goods, as well as under minded the supposed value of art based on the uniqueness of the work. The thing that I enjoy the most about his works is the way that he incorporates silkscreen in order to produce multiples of a single image yet still manages to make each one different and unique in its own special way. He was someone that took inspiration from the people and things that surrounded him and although he was not every well received when he first started out he continued to work and became a very well-known and respected artist.…

His neutral and obsessive attitude towards popular culture transformed his work into a quintessential reflection of the industrial era. His adaptation of a multilayered process, and obsession with reproduction became the underlying feature that would set him apart from most pop artists. Warhol had a detached crisp style of art making that was centred on commercial imagery found in media outlets such as advertisements, magazine clippings, comics and newspapers. The use of silk screen allowed him to create copious amounts of near identical prints in a short amount of time, however he was not actually interested in the amount he could produce, rather he was more inclined to work with a mechanical process in which silk screen offered, by doing this he was able to replicate and critique the very way popular culture functioned, believing that a mechanistic process would erode the value and meaning of the image, in other words the more exposed you are to an image the more detached you will be towards it, reinforcing the statement that pop artists were generally more critical towards the society they…

He was a draftsman, painter, filmmaker, and printmaker. Warhol participated in the pop art, video art, and postmodern art movements. He was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before he began making famous art for extravagant galleries, he was the highest paid successful commercial illustrator in New York. Even so, Warhol is most known because of his screen printed images of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell's soup cans associated with pop art. As a famed illustrator, his drawings were humorous, fancy, and silly, which contrasts with the detached and distanced mood of his pop art. Even though he thrived as a painter, many of his other talents influenced pop art just as much. In 1965, he became focused as a filmmaker and retired from painting. His films were not popular when they were first introduced, but soon gained international interest. He is currently remembered as one of the top filmmakers in history. Many people believe that after Warhol was shot that his career began to die. On the contrary, Andy Warhol developed his other skills and talents such as films, publishing, and painting commissioned portraits. He later passed away on February 22, 1987. To this day, Andy Warhol continues to influence artists around the…

And now we get to the notorious Campbell soup can, something simple as that, yet Warhol decided to give them a chance of taking the path to become an art piece. Warhol makes more than twenty Campbell soup can paintings that are today a worldwide icon. One of the most known Warhol’s words about pop-art were “Once you ‘got’ pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought pop, you could never see America the same way again”.…
