Angel Of Death Or Infant Killer: A Case Study
The notorious case that took place over three decades is making its way back into the public’s eye as Genene Jones aka the “Angel of Death or Infant Killer” is said to walk free next year May 2018. This is due to an old Texas law that releases some prisoners to relieve overcrowding in prisons. Genene Jones was a nurse who worked at one of the hospitals in San Antonio, Texas before going to another one in Kerrville. Every time she worked, there would be a significant amount of deaths, which lead to her shifts being called the “death shift”. She is thought to be responsible for more than 60 infant deaths and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. However, due to the old Texas law, she will be getting out early, at the age of 66.

On December 28, 2014; Rachel Melacon and Allen Coats gave birth to Olivia Coats. Unfortunately the doctor, who delivered her baby girl, by using forceps against the young couple’s wishes, caused unfixable injuries to the newborn. The couple puts blame for the death of their five-day old baby girl, Olivia Coats. However even though she requested to have a C- section, due to the size of the baby, Dr. George T. Backardjiev shut the idea down. Dr. Backardjiev told Rachel that it would leave a scar afterwards. He ended up using the forceps to deliver her baby girl. Dr. Backardjiev struggled with the forceps, “he even put his foot on the bed” to try and pull the baby out. “Dr. Backardjiev was turning and twisting, and she would never come out, he put the forceps one way and the other; when he touched the top and the side of the skull, we heard a pop, like clay cracking in pottery and heard her skull crush.” The medical staff told the couple their baby was alive; then Olivia was quickly transferred to “Children’s Memorial Harmann Hospital” in Houston Texas, it was at that hospital that they were informed that their daughter had suffered several fractures to her skull and spine; then on January 2nd Olivia Coats died. Angie coats told ABC News “we’re not mad at the hospital, this not their fault. It is one man’s fault, we only want justice for Olivia; we want the person responsible, which is the doctor. We don’t want the hospital being shunned.” The parents plan to sue Dr. Backardjiev for the death of their baby girl. The hospital administration and independent medical staff leadership are all committed in taking all necessary actions in understanding why this happened. The Houston Chronicle reports that the parents of Olivia Coats started a campaign to ban the use of forceps during delivery called “The Olivia Law.” The couple also started a fundraiser on Go Fund Me to raise awareness about the use of forceps explaining how damaging they can be, so far the…

The case of Andrea Yates is unmistakenly horrifying. For most of society trying to comprehend how a mother could drown five, count them five of her own children is impossible. Our society does not care about mental illness when they find out through court testimony that the mother chased around the house her last and oldest child in order to get him into the same bathtub she had just drowned his four other siblings in. According to court testimony he came up for air several times trying to tell her he was sorry for whatever he did. The other children died with clumps of her hair in their hands in an effort to save their lives. I agree it is horrifying, but the verdict on appeal in 2004 (the murders were committed in 2001) that turned her life sentence around to not guilty by reason of insanity is one of the first cases I have heard of in Texas that any defense attorney managed to finagle out of a jury and I think it is humane and fair. It has been a long time coming in the history of the Texas court system and the reasoning of the majority vote in America to embrace the death penalty and/or life imprisonment. Andrea Yates suffered from a severe case of post-partum depression and the actions of her husband in the face of it all is highly questionable. One wonders how sane he is, or how uneducated. Regardless of her strange behavior and the fact that her husband was told that she was suffering from post-partum depression after the birth of the their first child he continued to impregnate her four more times. This should be a crime within itself.…

The Execution of Wanda Jean is a compelling documentary based on a convicted murderess name Wanda Jean Allen who was sentenced to death in 1989 after shooting her lover Gloria Leathers, whom she met in prison while serving for time in prison for another killing. This documentary shows how the state of Oklahoma continues to execute Wanda Jean to the death penalty in which she had a low IQ, bordering on mental retardation. With the help of family, friends and her legal team, Wanda files for clemency but the Clemency Board denies her plea. Although Oklahoma’s decision may seem to be cruel, I think there are many factors in which why she should of received the death penalty.…

In an effort to defend the position that physicians should administer lethal injections in states where the death penalty is still applied, it is important to understand considerations like these should be made on a case by case basis. Personally, I would be a little biased towards a victim who was a sociopathic criminal and displayed no traces of remorse after committing multiple murders. I believe in weighing the good and the bad. The amount of “bad” associated with such an individual definitely would outweigh the “good” in this specific case. Both ethical and legal considerations necessitate that licensed physicians administer lethal injections to inmates on death row. There is a high risk involved if executions were performed without the involvement of medical professionals. Procedurally, during a lethal injection, the inmate must be put to…

Infanticide has been practiced on every continent and by every level of cultural complexity. It has been practiced from hunter gatherers to modern civilization, including our own ancestors. When pregnant it is understandable that couples wish for either a boy or a girl but, it is another thing if their wish of having either a boy or a girl is guaranteed to come true. Those couples who wish to have a son and has one child turns out to be a girl seem to be in a most painful dilemma. “Cultural norms dictate that daughters marry out and transfer their emotional and economic loyalties to their husband’s family (Jimmerson 1990).” In Chinese culture, son’s are known to support at old age while daughters are viewed as no source of future economic security. Although rural china has no system of old age support, farming couples without sons are faced with a great dilemma of destitution due to old age. Therefore, in certain cases, these rural couples have responded to the great dilemma of not having sons by practicing infanticide on their female neonates. “Female infanticide then became common in traditional china, through natural hardships such as famines, floods, widespread disease and overpopulation often converged with cultural norms that favored sons and encouraged hard pressed families to abandon or kill their infant daughters (Jimmerson 1990).” The costume of the traditional Chinese believes that family members should follow the ancestral tradition. If a living woman was not available, they would often go buy…
