That is the number of dogs and cats killed in Canada every year because they don’t have a home. Would you rather spend thousands of dollars on a pure bred pet, than save the life of an animal in need? It is not only more ethical to adopt animals, but more sensible for a number of reasons. Adopting costs a fraction of buying a pure bred, reduces the number of abusive puppy mills, and limits overpopulation. From my personal experience having a family that has rescued a dog and a cat, I can’t imagine anything more enjoyable and rewarding than the love you will receive from them. If you are thinking about getting a pet, adopt. When you adopt an animal you don’t just save one life, you save two. You save the life of the animal you are adopting, and the life of the animal who now has a spot in the shelter. It would be pretty hard to find an animal that would love you more than an adopted one would, because they owe you their life. A life that would otherwise be spent on the streets, fighting for food, freezing in the cold, or a life spent in a cage that can only end two ways. Adoption or death. My dog Jazz has been rescued twice in her life. First she was rescued from a dump in Elliott lake when she was a puppy. She moved to Toronto and lived with our neighbour Joe. A few years later he couldn’t take care of her, so we offered to take her. When Joe comes to take her on walks, she gets so excited that she cries, and jumps 3 feet in the air, but on her way back, joe tells us that she drags him down the street back to our house.
