The book I chose for this essay is a little novel known as Animal Farm. I chose this book because it’s summary really caught my eye. I also had heard a lot about this book beforehand form teachers and peers. I believe this book was wrongfully banned and should be back on the shelfs!

Tracy Sutherland an English teacher provides an analysis of America’s education system by having her high school student’s apply George Orwell’s concepts in Animal Farm to their school. She writes about this is an article titled: Speaking My Mind: Orwell Farmed for Education for The English Journal. The article addresses the issue of what will come of our education system when the foundation is being tampered with and new concepts are constantly reshaping the system. Several students raise important points in their writing. Also, the article allows for a reflection on the types of teachers compared to characters in the novel: working ever so harder never questioning, just going through the motions, too nice to address key issues, or adamantly…

I can’t say I’m astonished by the State Board of Education’s decision to ban “To Kill a Mockingbird”. After all, what can you expect from such short-minded people? Such people that regrettably are put in the position to judge what books are moral and fit to be read by young adults. Is it the book’s display of what really happens in the world, or the book’s lessons of protecting innocence and standing up for what you see as right, that makes this book so disgraceful, that we must shelter young minds from?…

The story that this essay is all about is Animal Farm by George Orwell. I believe that the premise of the story is quite interesting. It is basically the retelling of a dream where world where all animals live free from the tyranny of their human masters. There are many great examples of all kinds of literary elements but the element of allegory is the most prominent in my opinion.…

The banned book that I have chosen to reflect on is To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Since 1977, this book has been banned from schools all over the country. The three main reasons that I believe this book is constantly being banned is the description of rape, the profanity and racial slurs, and the racism that takes place. There are many people that believe that the discussion of rape should not be introduced to students. This could bring up discussions in a classroom that may not be appropriate for some age groups. There is profanity in this book, but the way I see it, children are being exposed to more than this in real life. The racism is apparent in this book because an innocent black man is convicted of something that he didn’t do. However, this book is a great example of how things were in that time.…

Second-wave feminism. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The base of evolutionary biology. All of these major changes in the world were products of books. People that read these influential pieces of literature went on to change the world and make history. Often, banned books lead the standings of contributors, as many of them become world renowned names such as To Kill A Mockingbird. Without these books, this world simply would not stand where it does today. People ban books because of the explicit content they hold and the negative impact they leave the reader with. Books should not be banned as they trail-blaze the path towards changing the world.…

While writing this literacy narrative I felt confident that I would be able to complete the task as a book has very well effected my life. However, I did have some trouble starting the essay, which in every essay I have similar issues with, but once I get the hang of things I immediately adjust to the flow and keep writing. Deciding on the book that affected me the most was difficult to choose, as I had so many. Eventually I decided to write about the first time I became fully engulfed in a book. Choosing the novel Animal Farm was the perfect novel to chose as it is my favorite and most inspiring novel I ever read. The only thing I worried about, was that when writing this essay, I didn’t want to spoil the novel for whom ever reads my essay.…

The Catcher in the Rye. The Scarlet Letter. Huckleberry Finn. Harry Potter. The Diary of Anne Frank. Animal Farm. To Kill a Mockingbird. The Da Vinci Code. The Grapes of Wrath. These literary classics have been vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents (Banned Books). These great novels both teach important values and educate children about world affairs and classic themes. Unfortunately, each of these novels has been banned at one point in time. In a country where freedom is so adamantly advocated, it is a wonder that an issue like censorship would even come up, that such a controversy would sink its claws into the minds of states’ boards of education across the nation. Censorship is a needless restriction placed on developing minds that need the morals and values that banned books can give.…

George Orwell’s Animal Farm is an allegorical novel of the failed Russian Revolution. The animals of Animal Farm live under the control of their farmer, Mr. Jones. The animals are taught to rebel against the only real enemy they have. As the novel progresses, the farm falls under the control of the pigs. The events of the story unfold as a result of the actions of characters such as Mr. Jones, Old Major and Squealer. These results would not have been possible without the blind faith of the animals.…
