propaganda will lead society to action or inaction through reinforcement of what people already believe to be true. In Animal Farm, this way of exposure to current events is not designed to change opinions so much as reinforce existing opinions, prejudices, attitudes. Is propaganda for the good or bad of people? Propaganda varies in advertising, more so, action plan. In Animal Farm by Orwell, different types of Propaganda are introduced. Which represent the type of propaganda used during the Russian Revolution. In my own words, propaganda is information, which is most exerted from a biased or misleading nature, it used to publicize a particular political cause or point of view. One of the most famous and most pernicious propaganda. Name-calling. Most people might not be aware of the serious benefactors this type of propaganda brings into a certain point of view or standpoint. You might be thinking; Who’s going to listen to an opinion? Only seven billion people of course. Let’s put it into perspective, if this animal that is calling the other a name is not oppressed and is classified as a leader or takes place in a higher rank, the animals opinion (higher to the animals in lower power) will influence the opinion of the other animals on that animal that is being called a derogatory name.
In our society, we tend to listen to the greater power, even if that greater power might not summon the best vibes or prepositions. We listen to money and class, not poverty and the famished. In Animal Farm, we see an example of this kind of propaganda when Squealer and Napoleon call Snowball a “traitor” and a “criminal”. Quote on quote, in chapter 7 of “Animal Farm”; "Comrades!" cried Squealer, making little nervous skips, "a most terrible thing has been discovered. Snowball has sold himself to Frederick of Pinchfield Farm, who is even now plotting to attack us and take our farm away from us! Snowball is to act as his guide when the attack begins. But there is worse than that. We had thought that Snowball's rebellion was caused simply by his vanity and ambition. But we were wrong, comrades. Do you know what the real reason was? Snowball was in league with Jones from the very start! He was Jones's secret agent all the time. It has all been proved by documents which he left behind him and which we have only just
discovered. To my mind this explains a great deal, comrades. Did we not see for ourselves how he attempted–fortunately without success–to get us defeated and destroyed at the Battle of the Cowshed?" This kind of information frightened the other animals, Snowball could never be trusted, he was a danger to the animal race or so they think. And that is exactly what Squealer and Napoleon wanted. Another great form of this art is euphemism propaganda, meaning an indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt in a way when referring to something unpleasant. War being referred as a “campaign” or “A Moment of American Leadership” is a euphemism. Another euphemism being Squealer in “Animal Farm” calling their supply of resources which are split at the time a “readjustment” of food instead of a “reduction”. There are plenty types of propaganda used in Animal Farm by Orwell. One of the most heart wrenching one? Testimonial propaganda. This type of propaganda is supported by another source, that source usually being influenced or has a reinforced opinion by their leader. Like taking candy from a baby. This type of information or advertising makes one of my favorite characters in the book, Boxer, look witless. The question is, is it only Boxer in Animal Farm that looks like this? Yet again, the book is based off others and a real-life crisis. Boxer is the testimony in testimonial propaganda. Boxer tells all the animals to work harder and because the other animals admire Boxer's work ethic, they follow his lead. When Napoleon begins executing other animals, Boxer can only say, "I would not have believed that such things could happen on our farm. It must be due to some fault in ourselves. The solution, as I see it, is to work harder" (Chapter 7, page 28) When the going gets tough, Boxer falls back on simple mottos. He has no other option. By the end of the novel, Boxer has worked so hard for the Rebellion that he's worked himself to death. He's so weak from starvation and trying to rebuild the windmill that he's useless. The pigs send him off to be slaughter, and he's too weak to fight back. Witless. Propaganda is chum for the brainless. Society could not function without propaganda, society is the common Mormon man. Propaganda is the many wives. Plenty is not enough. Propaganda is used in today’s politics. My mother thought it was absurd that propaganda continues to be part of our life’s. But there is a trace back to Russian Revolution. Similar people. Similar advertising. Similar factors and examples. Propaganda was so immense and alive even more so since the Presidential Election was just so recent. Propaganda was used left and right. It is used worldwide! A perfect example for this would-be Donald Trump. Not only an asshole nationwide. A great and magnifying propaganda example would be glittering generalities, which was used during the election. “We’re going to build a wall, and Mexico’s going to pay for it.” Said with passion, Donald Trump. Certainly, awakened something in others, and it wasn’t love. Glittering generalities is based on using emotionally appealing words with no basis to evoke a positive response. As discussed earlier, Testimonial and Name calling are other examples of propaganda used in today’s culture. Testimonial propaganda is taking quotes out of context to support or reject an idea of policy. Mainly really using well known people to endorse an idea, policy or product. Name calling being using words to incite fear and prejudices and create a negative opinion. To basically diminish and discredit a person. Or a person’s reputation. It can even be targeted to a race/ethnicity. Mr. Trump is very familiar with that. What’s amazing about Trump (don’t worry this won’t take long, it’s not a very long list) is that he’s pretty great at hidden meanings. Trump basically labeling others, he wants to make it known to everyone with blood pumping that they are inferior to him. “I have many friends who are; Black, Woman, Hispanic, Muslim, Disabled.” This is testimonial propaganda, he wants to side and express he knows the struggle and in no way, is he discriminating others. We would never think that! Building a wall to separate families is in no way discriminating. The man-made fun of a disabled man. If that doesn’t scream name calling, is your eye sight or hearing in good condition? Propaganda has not changed a bit since the Russian Revolution. In fact, it’s only become a codified standard of a “purer” political lifestyle. Propaganda ultimately serves as a beacon of light for the future of politics in the United States. Even the world, and if you want to be as extremely theatrical as president trump, even the universe. We still face the same struggles and same class injustice that were issued during the Revolution. We face the same situations Boxer and Clover, and even Snowball dealt with. There will always be a type of Squealer in society, generation. Propaganda is meant to enhance an opinion that is already present, but what matters is whether that opinion is wrong. There are views and advertisement to do good and others to do plainly the opposite.
