In the case of passive neglect, abuse is not intentional and is often the result of lack of information or knowledge. The most prevalent of these forms of abuse is that of the latter. For example, if a person were to notice a dog chained outside with no food, water, or shelter, they might assume that the animal is being neglected. In order to prove this however, one must watch and make sure that the dog really is being neglected, and it’s not just outside for a little while in order to use the restroom. If the animal is indeed being neglected, meaning no food, water, or shelter has been offered to the animal within a twenty-four hour period, and then it becomes appropriate to inform the authorities. It is never a good idea to apprehend the person in question or to confiscate the neglected animal by yourself, as the resulting confrontation may become dangerous. Instead wait for the authorities to come and assess the situation and for them to determine if the animal needs to be removed from the …show more content…

The ASPCA believes that the successful prosecution of animal cruelty offenders should include fines, jail sentences, and counseling to prevent additional acts of cruelty ( Guiding Principles, 2016). They believe that the people who commit criminal acts toward animals should get a punishment that will match the offense. The assumption that they are making is that there is a correlation between animals and human violence. The are also assuming that if someone is abusive to animals, then they are abusive to humans as well. This is not a fair assumption. There are certain people who have criminal pasts and they find a new start in life by taking care of pit bulls or horses. Animals can help them become better humans. As well as helping them learn love and…

Everyday animals are being taken advantage of and being brutally abused. They are beaten, kept in cages, and enslaved just for a person’s own amusement (www.peta.org). Humans like to have freedom but yet they have no problem locking animals away because they don’t feel like dealing with them. The law sees passive and active abuse as illegal but they don’t have strict consequences that follow. Passive abuse is when the crime is less intentional and active is doing it intentionally to cause pain upon an animal (www.pet-abuse.com). Why should animals have to endure this cruel torture? What did they do to deserve this? I believe animals should be more protected under the law and not just thrown around like garbage.…

Throughout history, it has been proven that animal abusers are most likely linked to other crimes. A source says, “Speculation regarding a possible link between violence toward animals and violence toward people can be traced back as far as writings from philosophers in the fourteenth century” (Campbell 278). A perfect example would be the famous serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer. The source also says Jeffrey Dahmer, “murdered and cannibalized at least seventeen people from 1978 through 1991. A subsequent investigation revealed that he captured and tortured many animals before graduating to acts that involved killing humans” (Campbell 272). If a registry had existed back then, authorities could have arrested him sooner or even prevented the barbarous murders from happening. Often times, this type of criminal begins by abusing defenseless animals and then progressing to more vicious acts of abuse towards humans.…
