The ARL’s education department’s goal is to “promote compassion toward animals and humans, as well as responsible pet care” (found in the ARL Humane Education page). Children have the opportunity to attend workshops, birthday parties, several school programs, and shelter tours oriented around humane education. They learn about animal health and safety and have the opportunity to foster pets through a school program called Critter Camp. The ARL also works in partnership with the North Central Iowa Correction Facility to “train inmates to rehabilitate neglected horses, and ready them for adoption” (as stated in the ARL 2012 Community Report) as part of the Rescue Ranch and Whinny Program. Finally, the ARL houses a cruelty intervention education coordinator “who investigates animal abuse and cruelty situations across the state of Iowa” and “works to educate the public on how to identify and report animal abuse and neglect” (stated by the ARL’s Cruelty Intervention site).
