Global Animation Industry: Strategies, Trends and Opportunities Report 2013
Description:

The rapid advancement of technology has made computer animation available to the masses and the animation industry is one of the fastest growing industries. The demand for animated entertainment has expanded with the increase in broadcasting hours by cable and satellite TV along with the growing popularity of the Internet.
In the past, animation series were aimed at children aged nine and below. In recent years however, TV stations have been producing animation series for teenagers, adults and the whole family. Animation series like The Simpsons and King of the Hill have been successfully aired on primetime TV.
The major animation markets include the United States, Canada, Japan, China, France, Britain and Germany.
The current animation industry is influenced by large multinational studios as well as TV broadcast companies and cable channel companies. They are engaged in activities from pre-production to distribution, as well as new sources of revenue such as DVD sales and intellectual property licensing.
The multinational studios leverage various forms of partnership, coproduction and joint ventures with global partners. Several countries subsidize their national film industries, including animation and therefore, strategies such as co-production have been adopted to explore global market opportunities and production subsidies. Co-production has emerged as a popular strategy for studios in many countries. Funding flows for coproduction, from Hollywood to other countries and vice versa are very common.
As coproduction has increased, animation studios in China and India have become popular co-production partners of studios in Europe, Japan, and North America. From the point of view of the major studios, coproduction can provide flexibility while working with small studios

Digital television expansion during the last decade has also led to a collection of niche networks to launch that focus only on a particular demographic or program-type, like Nicktoons which only focuses on animation, and Nick Jr. which focuses on preschool content. This expansion of options for children’s content has convinced some members of Congress that applying public money to any media would be a waste, especially since networks like Nick Jr., through the influence of PBS, have started to list the educational focuses of each show on their website and before the show airs (nickjr.com, 2011). Even though shows on other networks, especially preschool programming, have taken a more educational stance they are still a part of commercial television where the network must worry about ratings and appeasing advertisers to make revenue from commercials. This concern over ratings and commercial revenue overshadows the network’s concern for providing quality, educational content for children. PBS existence as a content producer, and competitor to the commercial networks, forces the commercial networks to attempt to rise up and match the quality of PBS’s children’s…

One of the unique features of the new idea was that Arundel would purchase sequel rights before the first films were even made and released. Another feature was that the investor group would not make artistic judgements or attempt to select the rights for particular movies based on predictions of a possible sequel’s success. Lastly, Arundel’s advance cash payments for the rights, at an agreed-upon price per film, would help finance production of the initial films.…

It's a bit of an obvious statement at this point in film history that animation isn't just for kids anymore. From Fritz The Cat to last year's Waltz With Bashir, animation hasn't been the sole domain of wisecracking, family-friendly animals for a good long time. Still, given that more 'adult' animation doesn't necessarily tear it up at the box office, there's a certain degree of fearlessness that goes into making a feature length animated film on more mature topics. Multiply that fearlessness by a factor of ten if you're making a full length claymation film about depression and loneliness. Multiply it by hundred if you're Director/writer Adam Elliot, and you actually make the whole thing work.…

The '90s saw the significant impact of computer animation with Toy Story, the first full digital animated feature that became a box office success and garnered many technical awards in top award-giving bodies such as The Academy Awards. Babe, a combination of live and computer animated effects, became a huge hit as well. This animation timeline continues in the new millennium with Shrek, The Lord of the Rings and many more.…
