Shafer gave an account of Anna Kingsley’s life, who he explains to be and African “princess”. He shares the struggles that she endured once being an enslaved African American to becoming a free woman and plantation owner. The book was very interesting but I felt lacked first hand evidence of Anna Kingsleys life. Anta Majigeen Ndiaye (Anna Kingsley) was taken from her home in Senegal.…

His roommate gives Shaun a lecture, similar to his talk with Liz, complaining that Shaun is being held back by Ed who refuses to leave, pay rent, or close the front door. Shaun’s roommate mentions that everyone at his office is out sick and that some crack-heads bit his hand on is way home the previous night. Shaun heads to his menial job where none of the other employees, who are mostly much younger high school kids, take him seriously. Shaun is left in charge due to the fact that everyone else mysteriously called in sick. His step father shows up at Shaun’s work to remind him about their dinner with his mum and suggests Shaun brings flowers to compensate for forgetting last time. The story starts out as well with two friends, Victor and Michael, Victor being the main subject. Promising himself that he was going to make Teresa, a girl he had a crush on, his girl this year, was his main goal. Therefore he had decided to have French, for Teresa also had French, also hoping he had other classes with her as well. (Soto 1) Victor was stoked and excited for French class, but at the same time wanted to impress Teresa. After first period, Victor attempted to “accidentally” bump into Teresa by waiting until after she left the homeroom to leave at the same time. When Teresa and Victor had bumped into each other, he made a complete fool out of himself, for he had tried to say something clever, however, he acted foolishly and spoke the wrong things instead. Victor instantly regretted what he had said and wished for his whole life to be over and restart. (Soto 3) After lunch and a few class periods came French, where Victor had “impressed” Teresa with his French skills and speaking. Although he had made a huge fool of himself to the class, Teresa was actually intrigued with his language speaking skills and had asked to help her with her own French. Definitely not wanting to miss an opportunity with Teresa, Victor gladly accepted her request, and after school, ran straight to the library to rack up three French text books to study. (Soto…

This book focuses on Fleur, a late thirty something, who meets men, moves in, and then cashes out a small nest egg before moving onto the next hapless soul. She finds these men mainly at funerals – for their beloved wives. Over the top yes, but it seems to work and provide a bit of comedy in this book. Everything is working along with her plans until Fleur crashes the funeral of Richard, a grieving widow who starts to realize he never really knew his deceased wife nor the rest of his family. Fleur begins to provide the support Richard needs as well as the support his family needs and then trouble begins. Fleur starts to wonder if she should hang up her funeral crashing ways for finding true love with one person especially when her daughter Zara shows up and fits in so well with Richard’s family. The internal fight Fleur experiences leads to a few twists and honestly, I didn’t know how this book was going to end. I think in either instance I would have been fine with the path she took.…
