Anna Quindlen Doing Nothing Is Something Summary
A structured life, a busy life, overtakes the existence we –as humans– lead. Throughout life, we become bound by countless obligations that clog up the highways of our own being. These boundaries, that could be the “grinders” of our highway, require a certain order to keep them together, just as the fragile existence of the food chain always requires a predator and his prey. Without order, this life would be chaos, ever drifting into a plane of fiery hell, or worse… self-annihilation. The bright side to this can only become by leading our own “overscheduled” lives, and this begins with the children. Others such as Anna Quindlen in her essay, “Doing Nothing Is Something”, refute this statement by saying, “Our children are as overscheduled as …show more content…
Without this strict arrangement, we live in no boundaries where in essence, society corrupts and we fall apart. Some people believe that a child’s life ensures suppression of free-thinking individuals but wouldn’t it make it easier to think outside the box? Often times, the more a child remains restrained, the craftier they become. This can be seen in situations such as the ever so theoretical Underground Railroad. The slaves kept getting caught escaping from their master’s grounds so the abolitionists and escaped slaves came up with ingenious ideas for hiding runaways to make sure of safe passage to the south. Children, like the slaves, will find their own ways of freedom whether wanted or not. Without a schedule, it becomes hard for a child to find their own way in this world. Also, as time proves, children need this strictly chiseled life to keep from doing things in the streets. In the early 1900s, children would roam the streets and create gangs that caused trouble, so, in an effort to clean that up, kids went to school by a U.S. law. This shows that in order create balance, we must keep our children busy and tighten up on

In this argumentative essay, “A Quilt of A Country” , Anna Quindlen argues that diversity connects the people of the United States as seen by her use of many different facts and quotes. As Quindlen argues she mentions “Of all the nations in the world, the United States was built in nobody’s image”, she explains how while the US was being initiated the founding fathers had not based the image they had of the US on any other country or union. Quindlen also mentions, “Today the citizens of the United States have come together once more because of armed conflict and enemy attack” talking about how we unify as a nation only when tragedy strikes. A while later she mentions,“ When the photographs of all those who died in the World Trade Center destruction…

Though she doesn’t touch on having balance between scheduling and free time, many people recommend it. In the article “The downside of no downtime for kids,” published by PBS, Dorothy Sluss who is a professor of elementary and early childhood education stated, “For every week of intensive activity or sleepaway camp, children need three weeks of less-structured time.” Sluss went on to explain that the time children take to reflect is when “they develop and have sensory stimulation.” The article has a large focus on children being in activities to help their communication skills but relates is back to their alone time and being able to reflect better in their own…

These schools have claimed that one of their goals is to help student gain personal fulfillment, yet it's hard to do so when a student’s school day is scheduled like as if it was a prison. In Source B, the bell schedule shows that students are only given four minutes between class. Four minutes isn't enough time for the students to socialize. It's ironic because schools encourage conformity in order for a students to become more sociable. To explain the prison analogy more thoroughly, as Source E states, children have a mandatory twelve year school sentence like a prisoner without the possibility of parole. A child being constricted of the use of their time diminishes the creativity and spontaneity that helps flourish a person's individuality…

It separates the parent and child for a very long period of time. School is a gargantuan waste of time. We waste little over two hours between classes in a standard school week. Not having school would help the environment because we wouldn’t have to waste our precious tree by cutting them down to make more pencils and paper not to mention the lumber used to construct the schools. With more time together the parent and child could do so much more together. School wastes time, money, and it hurts parent’s relationships with their children, not to mention it destroys the environment and it needs to…

Children are very important to the society since they will grow up to be good adults in the future. Education is one of the most necessary things that can make children to be quality adults. Someone may think that children should have freedom to think and learn whatever they want, so they let their children learn in the unstructured way. However, for kids, between 6 months to 4 year-old, structured education is better than unstructured education because children will be discipline adults, gain knowledge and experiences from school, and face the real world. Structured education trains children to be discipline adults. According to the article “Providing Structure in the Life of a Child” (Harper, 2012), Dr. Robert Shaw states that clear structure makes children stronger in physical or psychological behaviors. This structure should be given to children both at homes and schools by using 3 elements which are physical, order and human. Physical element will let children realize that homes are their places to live, and schools are their work places. In other words, children will know that different places have different purposes to stay. For example, they can do something at home, but they cannot do the same thing at school. Order element makes children can organize what they will do in their lives, and what they should do first or last. For instance, they should wash their hands before having dinner; they should brush their teeth, wear pajamas and pray before going to bed. Another order is they have to go to school on Monday to Friday. Parents should set schedule for them on weekend as well. For example, they can play what they like to play on Saturday, and go to church on Sunday. This element helps children so much to manage everything in their lives in the future. The last element is human element. Adults have to guide children what they should do as human being. They should see if their…

First of all I would like to emphasize that the influence by the parents is very important for the future of the children. If nobody controls and takes care about the children痴 activities they can make a lot of mistakes in their future life. I believe that when a child does any bad activity he or she cannot see the bad result of this activity. If NOBODY notices this child about his/her bad activity, he/she will continue to do this activity, and it will become a habit for this child. After some years he/she cannot stop himself/herself FROM doing this activity. Thus, there should be someone to control the behaviors of children. Children cannot handle their behavior by themselves.…
