Anne Frank shows the proverb “When he has to, the devil eats flies” which, coincidentally, originated in germany, when she uses an office and warehouse as a hiding place, dies of disease, and must live with seven other people. Anne Frank shows ingenuity when using the office and warehouse as a hiding space. In a world book entry written by Dan Zeff on Anne Frank, she states that they “Lived in hiding… in a secret annex in the amsterdam office and …show more content…
warehouse.” (Zeff). She shows ingenuity because there were not many places she could hide a lot of people, so she used a few places that were hiding in plain sight. She hid in an open area (the warehouse) as well, which was most likely abandoned and a place no one would bother to look for hiding Jews. Anne Frank also shows strength, oddly when she dies of Typhus. Zeff states that “Anne died there of typhus in 1945” when she was finally captured.” (Zeff). She shows strength for one main reason though, when looking back through all she has been through. She has ran from Nazis for years and has been through heck and high water and only died when a dangerous disease caught her, which at the time could most likely not be avoided. Finally, selflessness is shown in Anne’s character. In erh time avoiding the Nazis, she mentioned “the stresses of living in close quarters with seven other people as well as constant fear of discovery.” (Zeff). She shows that she is willing to stay with many other people in order to help save their lives, as well as rationing food. She only took what she needed along with the rest of her roommates and was able to live on what they had. Anne Frank is a very ingenuitive, selfless person who shows that even when a young and fortunate girl must, she will show her true instincts
Pearl Harbor shows that “when he has to, the devil eats flies” when it becomes a date that will live in infamy, when every man, woman, and child is a partner in the undertaking of our history, and when Germany declares war on the United States.
Firstly, Pearl Harbor begins to put fear through all the residents of the United States. President Franklin D. Roosevelt States that the events of Pearl Harbor will become “A date which will live in infamy” (Doerr). Everyone in the U.S. was utterly terrified because the United States was attacked by an enemy. They didn’t know what was to come next with the war, victory or defeat. Secondly, the Country showed compassion when the events of Pearl Harbor took place. FDR again states that “Every single Man, Woman, and Child is a partner in the… Undertaking of our… History” (Doerr). Everyone in the United States was brought together because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Be it through fear or love, everyone stood side by side waiting for the Allied powers to win the second world war. Finally, Survival is shown in the Events of Pearl Harbor. “Germany had declared war on the United States.” (Doerr). The entirety of our nation's survival rested in weather or not America and Russia would stop the Germans and bring us to victory and survival. Soldiers had to fight to survive during the war and often times had to ration food and live in horrible conditions. Pearl harbor will be remembered as an infamous day that brought us together for the survival of our
country.
The book from the Cirque Du Freak series, “Vampire Mountain” shows that “When he has to, the Devil eats flies” when the main character sees a dangerous spider, his partner headbutts a bear, and when he finds out that he could be killed in a mere game made for vampires. When The main character, Darren Shan, is face to face with a mad bear, and is saved by a strange, blue-robbed person named Harkat Mulds, Harkat shows Bravery in times of crisis. Darren states that “The second little person - the one i called lefty- stepped in front of it, caught it by its ears, and head-butted it!” (Shan 62). Harkat, AKA Lefty, showed bravery when defending his friend Darren because he knew what a massive animal like a grizzly bear was capable of, yet he still defended his friend. He was able buy Darren time to kill the mad grizzly and was therefore indebted to Harkat for his strange and effective tactics of defense. Once the band of vampires and little person found there way up the mountain and into the cave system, they took a break and Darren brought out his mentors pet spider in its cage, showing caution when another dangerous-looking spider creeps towards them. Darren stated that “I saw a spider creeping toward us… It looked dangerous… stepping away from the cage.” (Shan 86). Darren knows not whether the strange yellow spider is dangerous or not, yet he still backs away as he is unfamiliar with it. He shows caution as he asks his friend Gavner whether the spider is dangerous or not because he does not want to die from poison, showing his ability for survival even if he does need help. Finally, when the vampires are touring the giant caves of their sacred mountain, the gamesmaster and his newest friend, Kurda Smahlt make Darren show the characteristic of fearfulness. Kurda states that “Vampires could be killed taking part in these games.” (Shan 140) Darren begins to show fear when he knows that he could be killed or seriously injured. He sees vampires who have been cut, bruised, broken, and who have lost ears and eyes and teeth, which is when he begins to doubt his abilities and then shows fear. In a nutshell, Cirque Du Freak’s “Vampire Mountain” provides many examples of fear, caution, and bravery when it comes to survival.
The events on the date of 9-11-2001 show the proverb “when he has to, the devil eats flies” When two men cling to each other fearfully, a man is forced to make a split second decision, and when a man is filled with pure fear. When a survivor tells his story about his escape from one of the towers, he tells of his sense of protection he felt while clinging to a fellow member of the tower. He states that “We clung to each other, grabbed each other’s belt buckles and made sure we both go all the way out of the building” (Paul). This survivor felt as though he needed to protect another person and make sure he got out safely. He wanted to make sure the other man got out safely although he was scared and filled with sheer fear. A second example of this proverb is when a man describes his decision making ability. The article states that “Dittmar describes how his decision making ability was ‘tried, tested, and galvanized’” Dittmar had to make split second decisions on what he had to do when he was escaping the tower. The last example is when a man is filled with pure fear on the ground of the tower. He states that “I wanted to go home, I was afraid.” He didn't know what to do and said that he was frozen with fear.
This paper is a perfect example of why you should live by the Proverb “when he has to, the devil eats flies” because it shows that even when the most fortunate and loved people are forced to, they will still show their true survival instincts when they must.
