Anne Sayers Are Living To Work

In Sayers’ essay, she describes those who are “working to live” as disgruntled. They work to make money so that they can do other things. They believe that when the day’s labor is over, they can be themselves. Some people who fall into this category are the women who marry for money and the rich men/women who live leisurely on their income. The only difference between these people and the poor is that they have “escaped.” Those who are “living to work” do not feel the need to escape. They think of their jobs as an opportunity for self-fulfillment and enjoyment. If they were to be cut off from work, it would make them feel as though they were cut off from their life. Sayers includes artists, scholars, and teachers in this group. They do what they do out of love for it, not to make money.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to become a teacher; I love it. Teachers aren’t exactly known for getting paid a lot, the opposite of that actually. But none of that has ever mattered to me. I want to be a teacher and that is the only thing that has influenced my career choice. As Sayers said, it would be useless to pretend not to admire the vices of the rich. Sometimes, seeing people who make so much money and have such nice and expensive things makes me consider changing professions, but then I remember how much I want to be a teacher. The way I see it, it would be nice to have those luxuries, but not if it means I have to give up what I’m passionate about. No one has to tell them to work hard and do their best because they already have the initiative to do
