Victor Daniel Williams was accused of robbing a Victoria pizza parlour in October of 1993. The accused pleaded not guilty of this crime. Williams was of Aboriginal decent, the issue of prejudice became a factor in the case. Due to this, there was inquiry on whether or not he would be able to question the jury, challenge for cause, to make sure that they were impartial about his heritage. In his first trial, Hutchinson J. ruled in favour of the challenge for cause. This allowed two questions to be asked to the jury. For “procedural errors”, the Crown applied for a mistrial. The Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) is a non-profit organization that seeks to break the cycle of generational poverty in Central Harlem by providing children with the resources to gain a range of skills and opportunities. The two multiservice charter schools known as Promise Academies were also created in partnership with HCZ. Through its cradle-to-career program children are to be supported in multiple aspects of life from the moment they are born until they graduate from college. In his book, Ordinary Resurrections: Children in the Years of Hope, Jonathan Kozol pulls back the veil and provides readers with a glimpse of the harsh conditions and unrelenting hope that exists in a community located in the South Bronx called Mott Haven. Mr. Kozol provides his own socially conscious and very informative view of the issues facing the children and educators in this poverty ravaged neighborhood. Just his commentary would paint a very bleak picture of the future. It is the words of the children that give this book optimism and meaning. Lower Richmond is a school that educates from kindergarten to fifth grade. Nothing spectacular comes from this school, as it as just an ordinary elementary school. The school is surrounded by racially segregated neighborhoods. The city is home to many workers. But these workers do not survive off career made jobs, but do off daily tasks. Even though Lower Richmond is trying to thrive, its academic system struggles greatly. The chapter continues to speak of other schools in the area that has predominantly black students. The children do receive aid witch school supplies thanks to help of most teachers from the schools, one being swan school. Murray dealt with several ACEs throughout her life including drug abusive parents, neglect, a parent with a chronic illness, among several others. She had some would say a very challenging childhood. She had to care for herself and make decisions for herself. Like several youth she made several poor decisions throughout her like, but she also made several remarkable decisions during her youth. Even though she did not accept a lot of her ACEs at first and ignored the fact that her family had numerous stressors, she finally accepted them later in life and became resilient toward them to move on and be an accomplished adult who graduated from Harvard. PYD programs amongst several other youth programs are working to help children be as successful and as resilient as Murray was even after all of their ACEs. CM spoke to Indhira Reyes (DCP&P) in regards to services for Destiny (youth). Ms. Reyes informed CM that she is currently waiting for the approval of the referral Project Safe. Ms. Reyes stated that the evaluation report from Audrey Hepburn Children’s House is still pending and DCP&P has to fill out an additional history form for Audrey Hepburn Children’s House. Jennifer started off in Thacher Montessori preschool, a school that believes children are naturally inquisitive and can learn anything in a supportive environment. It was important that Jennifer get a foundation in learning to think critically and collaboratively in an environment that emphasized integrity, respect for oneself, others, and the environment. I had the opportunity to observe at the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center in Long Beach. It was my first time observing in this center so I had to be there before my observation time, which was at 2:30pm. Once, I entered the building the atmosphere was welcoming and enjoyable. The children I observed where around the ages of three to five. During my observation there was twenty-eight children and five teachers present. The building was all wooden on the inside and at the entrance there was a welcome wall colored with a rainbow. There were art projects hanged on the walls as well as learning material.
