The Philippines Annexed

The United States has had a negative history of greedy and powerful actions towards others. Taking away land and freedom. Ripping the culture and the souls of other races, that did not match the pale pigment of a commanding nation. The day the US stepped on Philippine soil, they realised the commercial advantage and opportunity they could have by making the island their own. “ Co ncern that the Filipinos were incapable of selfrule.” (Office of the Historian, 1)
They also feared that other powerful nations could at some point take over the island and use it to their advantage if they did not do so at that point. Though there was some American opposition that thought annexing the Philippines was wrong in many ways. Others who feared that nonwhite Filipinos could one day have a role in the American government. The US went for the chance of making the island theirs with war. The United States should not have annexed the
Philippines and call owned land their own.
Reasons by the United States to take over the Philippines were not very good ones. First off taking over a land for commercial opportunity with an already established culture, language, currency, and government is a very unfair move. “
The people that were for annexing the islands argued that there were business interests in thoughts of new markets and fields of investments,”
(
Word Press “The Philippines”) They took advantage of the fact that they were very weak.
Unprepared for a fight and to give up a place their lives started on. It was a waste of money and resources, they took very cruel action towards them just like the Spanish did when they fought

the natives, and it went against all governmental beliefs and what the U.S. stood for. It is unnecessary to have to own people in order to trade with them.
Another reason not to have annexed the Philippines was our approach to do so. “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent. When the white man governs himself, that is selfgovernment but when he governs himself and also governs another man, that is more than selfgovernment that is despotism.” (Abraham Lincoln). Referring to the white man’s tendency to treat people with a different skin pigment in a discriminating and unequal way. The Filipinos were for sure treated like they did not deserve to be human. “would not the people of the Philippines prefer the just, human, civilizing government of this republic to the savage, bloody rule… from which we have saved them?” (Albert J. Beveridge, 1) A helpless nation with a weak force and not so fortunate ways of living. The United States of America made the same mistake they did with the Native Americans. They figured the best way was the shedding of innocent blood to get what they wanted. It would have better to leave the Philippines as a separate nation.
The United States of America annexing the Philippines was a huge and terrible mistake that just made us look very bad in the long run. It was a waste of money, time, and in the end
America ended up shedding innocent blood and disturbing an already established culture.
Annexation was meant for the best, but never should have occurred. The vision the US had never became a reality but more of a nightmare. As if the slaughtering of the Native Americans had not taught them the meaning of independence. All the men, women, and children killed for no reason other than the fact that they were just there. Helpless and harmless living their lives on the island they had been on since birth. Trying to take control of another nation never ends well for either

side. One would think by now some countries have learned their lesson, But those who don’t learn from history are most likely to do the same mistake. Works Cited https://unitedstatesimperialism.wordpress.com/thephilippines/

Even before the Philippines were annexed by the U.S. there was tension between U.S. troops and Filipinos. One U.S. sentry shot a Filipino who was crossing a bridge. The situation deteriorated and eventually we entered into a war with the Philippines. It would take two years to settle this dispute, as compared to the four months needed to defeat the once powerful Spain. Though the U.S. had better arms, the guerilla warfare employed by the Filipinos left the Americans outmatched. Between 200,000 and 600,000 Filipinos died in the war, most from sickness and disease caused by the…

The Spanish have been a monarchy enforcing their laws and customs upon their colonies since the fifteenth century, so the United States should come to the aid of the filipino people by assisting in setting up a democratic government. Recently, America assisted in liberated the island nation of Cuba from spanish rule. The Cubans were tired of the unfair taxation inforced by the Spanish, as well as having no say in the way they are governed. If the Cubans felt this way about the Spanish, the Filipino people have similar feelings about the Spanish rule. The Spanish monarchy is a in complete control of the Philippines and as the proponent of democracy it is the American duty to share this wonderful political gift with nations that are deprived of their natural right to choose how their lands are governed. Recently, the United States government has been an ambassador of democracy in the the Dominican Republic. This country attempted to bring itself out of a tyrannical government on their own, but their effort was futile. The United States took over the Dominican’s government for a short period of time to help assist them in establishing a democracy. The United States has the ability to bring the most modern and socially responsible form of government to…

The first reason why the United States was right to annex the Philippines is because the Filipinos are not capable of governing themselves. William McKinley makes an excellent point, “That we could not leave them [Philippines] to themselves- they were unfit for self-governing- and they would soon have anarchy and misrule…” (Document C). The Philippines would have messed up if they would govern themselves. Albert J. Beveridge says, “The rule that all just government applies only to those who are capable of self-government,” (Document B). The Filipinos need the United States to help govern them. Both those men were right, the Filipinos were not ready.…

I firmly believe that the United States should have annexed the Philippines. I believe the United States should have annexed the Philippines because, if you how more power go take over countries and conquer them. Also if you have places conquered you can deploy your army and troops to spots closer to the enemies and you’re a more powerful country so less countries will try to fight you if you are a major world power. The United States should have annexed the Philippines for more power.…

Although controversial to some, the Americans made the right decision to annex the Philippines after successfully freeing them from Spanish tyranny and rule. Without American rule and support, the Philippines would have been an easy target to be taken over by Germany, England or Japan who all would have savaged the land and further suppressed the people. The Filipinos were weak, inexperienced and not ready to establish their own government and self rule themselves. During the time of the annexation, the Americans needed a strategic place in that part of the world to protect their interests, expand their trading partners and show the world they were a power to be reckoned with in spreading democracy. So even though the annexation of the Philippines was views by some as doing the same things as some of the other major countries, the Americans always viewed it as a short term solution to educate the people, help them establish themselves to self rule and to allow them time to prepare to protect themselves from other enemies.…

After winning the Spanish-American War in 1898, the United States gained control of three colonies and one of those colonies was the Philippines (42). Americans were split on their ideas of what to do with the Philippines. Some believed that the Philippines rightfully belonged to the U.S. so therefore the U.S. should retain the colony and govern it however they wish (42). One man who felt this way was Albert J. Beveridge, a U.S. Senator that opposed the anti-imperialist movement (42). Senator Beveridge sided with the imperialistic ideals that believed the U.S. had the right to control the Philippines as they pleased (42).…

Around 1900, imperialism became the most talked about issue within the United States. After the Spanish-American war ended and the U.S. gained many Pacific islands as a result, most Americans became concerned over whether to annex the Philippines or not. The Americans who wanted to annex the Philippines believed that they were in there as legally as the citizens themselves. Taking them was not wrong at all, nor was it violating the Declaration Of Independence (Doc 6). Albert…
