that Annie had seen in a vision, but did not stop them from going. After this, the sisters move in with their aunt. Moreover, when the girls first receive a visit from a school client, Fia knows going to Keane’s is wrong and a bad idea. However, the two depart for the school anyways, but only because Annie is eager to go since the client promised the school could cure Annie’s blindness. Eventually, the school prohibits Annie and Fia from living together. Fia is taught how to fight and escape “sticky situations” in heterogeneous ways. An example of one of these scenarios that is mentioned in the novel is when there are men guarding the door with tasers and Fia must escape while being tased. Keane uses Fia to either terminate the people he finds as threats or be a brigand, where she must steal the object Keane needs. She dreads completing these missions, but if she refuses to obey, Annie will be harmed or killed by the school. Later, Keane sends Fia to kill Adam, who is a man that not Keane, but Annie targeted.
Despite her instructions, Fia does not murder Adam. The reason behind her abandonment is that when she arrives to the scene, she cannot bring herself to take his life because she finds him attractive and can see his kindness when he helps a dog. Fia decides to lead Adam to somewhere safe and away from anybody working for Keane. While the two are walking, three men begin to follow, so she takes Adam through an alley, but soon reaches its dead end. The men follow Fia and Adam into the alley and Fia fights them off. As a result, Fia is shot in the arm, but does not let Annie know when she returns to the school for medical help. Soon after, Fia and James go dancing at a club. Afterwards, they are ambushed and Fia is kidnapped. Fia’s abductors take her to a building where she then finds Adam. Her and Adam conversate with one of the head people of the institute and are told if she and Annie leave Keane’s school, they will have freedom to live a normal life instead of being held captive like at Keane’s. Fia agrees to this compromise and tells James to bring Annie to the arch in St. Louis to meet her. When they meet, Fia tells Annie that she needs her dead so she can be free. Shortly after, Fia stabs Annie and leaves the scene. After watching the crime, James talks with Fia and notices a large blood stain on her shirt. He realizes that the murder was fake and Fia harmed herself to free Annie. When James asks Fia if she is going back to the school, she assures him that she is returning. In conclusion, Fia and Annie, who are sisters, escape Keane’s school for girls with special
abilities.
