Essence of Life
Froi (Froilan Santos), Renz (Renz Fontamillas), and "Arvin" (Arvin James Abril) are three engineering students who share a room in a hostel at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in Singapore. While Froi and Renz are average students from modest backgrounds, Arvin is from a rich family. Froi wants to become a wildlife photographer, but has joined engineering college to fulfill his father's wish. Renz on the other hand wants to uplift his family fortunes. Arvin is a wealthy genius who studies for the sheer joy of it. However, Arvin's passion is for knowledge and taking apart and building machines rather than the conventional obsession of the other students with exam ranks. With his different approach Arvin incurs the wrath of dean of college, Professor James Estelapia (Jolo). Arvin irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unorthodox answers, and confronts Jolo after fellow student Nickie hangs himself in his dormitory room. Joy had requested an extension on his major project on compassionate grounds his father had suffered a stroke but Jolo refused, saying that he himself was completely unmoved by his own son's accidental death after being hit by a train. Arvin denounces the rat race, dog-eat-dog, mindless rote learning mentality of the institution, blaming it for Nickie's death.

Threatened by Arvin's talent and free spirit, Jolo labels him an "idiot" and attempts on a number of occasions to destroy his friendship with Froi and Renz, warning them and their parents to steer clear of Arvin. In contrast, Jolo model student is John Bryan Medina (silencer), who sees a high rank at the prestigious college as his ticket to higher social status, corporate power, and therefore wealth. Bryan conforms to the expectations of the system. Arvin humiliates Bryan, who is awarded the honor of making a speech at an award ceremony, by substituting obscenities into the text, which has been written by

He does pranks such as setting off pocket-sized bombs in the bathroom to gain attention to himself. He could care less about what he is learning at school. The first few sentences of the book are, “I used to really hate school when I first started at Franklin High. I hated it so much the first year they called me the Bathroom Bomber. Other kids got elected G.O. President and class secretary and lab-squad captain, but I got elected the Bathroom Bomber” (Zindel 1). John was a character used to demonstrate how impossible it is for people to escape conforming to social standards. Although he was raised as a “savage,” or someone in the reservation, is upbringing, his knowledge of literature, and birth consequently transformed him into a science experiment and a show piece, because he was different from everyone else. His seemingly barbaric nature was utilized as a model to scientists as an experiment gone wrong. He had his own mind, and refused to assimilate. Although, John truly belonged to no class. He was not conditioned to be an Alpha, a Beta, a Gamma, a Delta, or an Epsilon. He was truly alone and unhappy. Unlike other citizens, who used the narcotic Soma to escape reality, he saw the world for what it was; broken.…

He is a sophomore in a New York City high school. He is terribly dissatisfied with his life and misbehaves in interesting ways to try to give meaning to his own existence. He appears to have great potential and wants to be an actor. Like most teens, he will eventually discover that he, and he alone, makes his life whatever it will become. John is a complicated guy. First of all, he has a real problem with any kind of authority. He is in constant conflict with his father; he lies to his teachers and refers to them as "retarded." In fact, he lies to pretty much everybody, except Lorraine. In school he spends his time setting off firecrackers in the bathroom and playing pranks on substitutes, though he says those days are behind him now. Despite disliking authority figures and school, he's really smart and can get good grades when he wants to. However, more often he uses his intelligence, good looks, and charm to manipulate people. Lorraine tells us that John is "extremely handsome" (2), and John immodestly agrees: "Like Lorraine told you, I really am very handsome and I do have fabulous eyes" (3). John writes that he's "going to be a great actor" (3), and, with his good looks and imagination, we can well believe it. John also has a softer, compassionate side, and thinks deeply about the meaning of life and death. Lorraine tells us that John would be "the last person on earth" (2) to show that he has compassion, and that he pretends he doesn't care about anything in the world. He is only fifteen, but is already a heavy drinker and a heavy smoker. Let's break this down:John and his ParentsJohn does not get along with his parents, especially his father, whom he refers to as "Bore." One of the first things we learn…
