“Deep Down Popular”

“Deep Down Popular” by Phoebe Stone is about a tomboy, Jesse Lou, who is about to spend a lot of time with her crush, Conrad Parker Smith. The setting of this story takes place in the small southern town of West Taluka Falls, Virginia.

Jesse Lou is a sixth grader who enjoys writing poems to the boy she loves, Conrad Parker Smith, the most popular boy in her school. Jessie Lou has been in love with Conrad since the second grade. Conrad has tons of friends while Jesse Lou has friends when she wants to. During the beginning of the school year, Conrad’s leg begins to weaken so he starts to wear a leg brace. Since he has a leg brace, Conrad is not able to play soccer anymore and has to quit. His popularity drops down, and he can’t keep up with any of his friends anymore. Jesse Lou and Conrad live close to each other, so Jesse Lou’s teacher asks her to help Conrad home everyday. At first, Jessie Lou is very shy, but the more she hangs out with him, she becomes more comfortable. Jesse Lou, Conrad, and fourth grader Quentin Duster start to spend more time together almost everyday. They all get involved to save Bailey’s Hardware from the Big Box store which us going to open up near the town. While this is all occurring, Jesse Lou hopes that Conrad will keep limping.

Spending all this time with Conrad is Jesse Lou’s dream come true. However when Conrad’s leg brace comes off and is able to play soccer again, everything changes. Conrad’s popularity is about to come back while Jesse Lou stays the same.

The overall tone of the book is touching and serious because Jesse Lou really likes Conrad and is able to spend time with him. It’s about real feelings of real kids. My reaction so far to the book is sad because when Jesse Lou finds out that Conrad doesn’t need his leg brace anymore, her heart breaks. She knows he’s going to become popular again and possibly forget her.
