What effect can a story have on the world? Broke Back Mountain is a book written by Annie Proulx that was written to highlight and hopefully eventually change how people view homosexuals. In the book, they use quite a bit of graphic text to describe the relationship between the two cowboys. I believe they use that graphic text in order to kind of in a way animalize the Jack and Ennis in order to show that their relationship is natural. A passage that shows this in the book is on page 14. It starts simply with them trying to sleep and the weather was cold so they shared a tent and a bed role. But then it quickly escalates when it starts to talk about them being more intimate. Then in goes off into this sex scene between Jake and Ennis. “Ennis jerked his hand away as though he’d touched fire, got on his knees, unbuckled his belt, shoved his pants down, hauled Jack onto all fours and, with the of the clear slick and a little spit, entered him, nothing he’d done before but no instruction manual needed.” (page 14) This part of the passage is a prime example of what I discussed before. By using natural terms to describe their relationship in a way the author is trying to forge a correlation in the reader’s brain between nature and homosexuality. So that way when people think about homosexuality they look at homosexuality as something that’s natural something that is ok and not something that society should look down on. The reason I chose those passages specifically is because they are some of the most important passages in the story.
