another day as a hostess
Nicolette Roberts
Mr. Forrest Roth
English 101-068
1 December 2011 Another Day as a Hostess In America today, there are many jobs that I could have choose from, from almost impractical jobs, like a super star or a singer, to an easy job, like answering phones as a secretary, but there is only one job for me. It may not be the job that I love or want to have, but it may be a well-paying job. In picking what job I wanted, I had three choices: to work and be happy, to be a laborer and not get much time off, or to play and have a lot of time to myself to participate in activities. While some people claim they have a laboring or relaxing job, others say their job isn’t that bad and they wouldn’t mind to go to work. Just like the people claim their job isn’t that bad, neither do I. My job as a hostess at Carrabba’s Italian Grill isn’t the type of job that I dread going to everyday. Being a hostess there is enjoyable, but at the same time it is mentally challenging. Of these three categories, I consider my job to be the work type more than a play or labor type of job. The amount of effort that I put into a task is neither frivolous nor over demanding for fair compensation merits the title of work. Being able to work at my job is the perfect middle between labor and play. It isn’t super demanding and serious, but at the same time, it is rewarding and fun. The reason why I started working as a hostess at Carrabba’s Italian Grill was because one of my good friends was working at that restaurant and told me to go in and apply, and I did. She and I worked there together for a while, but then when she moved, she had to quit that job. Instead of quitting and going find a different job with different people in a totally different atmosphere, I stayed working at that same restaurant. I stayed because I felt so close to all the people that worked there and even the regulars that came in all the time to eat and drink at the bar. I felt like that I needed to

“He worked himself to death, finally and precisely, at 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning.” The promise of reward for all the hard work and extra hours is wasted on a shortened life barely lived. Every day turned into a blur, barely distinguished from the next. In “The Company Man” by Ellen Goodman, she used a variety of rhetorical devices to tell how she feels Phil, and other working class Americans, work too hard and end up sacrificing their lives, hobbies, and families for a chance at success and how the ideology of big companies ruin the lives of their own.…

In “Is Your Job an Endangered Species?” Andy Kessler effectively organizes his work by using different grouping skills. He introduces his idea by grabbing the attention of his audience; however, his informal tone isolates his audience. Kessler writes to persuade the reader on his belief that the advancement in technology is negatively impacting the job industry by replacing thousands of everyday jobs. He cynically groups workers into two types: Creators, “ones driving productivity”(Kessler 331); and servers, “ones who provide services to creators”(Kessler 311). He depicts servers in a very negative connotation that directly insults the job. When presenting main points, Kessler utilizes various appeals to back up his reasoning.…

At my Starbucks, we would have one person working each shift. We had three shifts per day, the opening shift, the midday, and the closing shift. With all my luck I got to either open the store, or close the store. I really didn't like opening or closing, but I said to myself, money is money, and I can't go wrong with making money. Another thing that bothered me about my job was the money. My starting salary was only $6.50 per hour, while other Starbucks salaries started at $8.00 an hour. I didn't apply anywhere else, so I guess I was stuck with the job I had for now.…

I could drift along like this, in some dreamy proletarian idyll, except for two things. One is management. If I have kept this subject on the margins thus far it is because I still flinch to think that I spent all those weeks under the surveillance of men (and later women) whose job it was to monitor my behavior for signs of sloth, theft, drug abuse, or worse. Not that managers and especially "assistant managers" in low-wage settings like this are exactly the class enemy. In the restaurant business, they are mostly former cooks or servers, still capable of pinch-hitting in the kitchen or on the floor, just as in hotels they are likely to be former clerks, and paid a salary of only about $400 a week. But everyone knows they have crossed over to the other side, which is, crudely put, corporate as opposed to human. Cooks want to prepare tasty meals; servers want to serve them graciously; but managers are there for only one reason - to make sure that money is made for some theoretical entity that exists far away in Chicago or New York, if a corporation can be said to have a physical existence at all. Reflecting on her career, Gail tells me ruefully that she had sworn, years ago, never to work for a corporation again. "They don 't cut you no slack. You give and you give, and they take."…

People everywhere are faced with the unanswered question, “When am I working too much?”, “When do I stop?” Due to the constant increase in our cost of living, people believe they are forced into working longer and more demanding hours. People need to learn how to split their time and energy between work and the other important aspects of their lives. In the two essays, “Hit the Brakes”, by Christopher Dewolf and “Stupid Jobs”, by Hal Neidzviecki, it is shown that spending too many hours on your job, creates less time for a personal life, which creates many problems. Society has become obsessed with the demanding and vastly expanding workplace environment, so much so that quality time spent with self and loved ones, which is crucial to becoming a well rounded person, is often disregarded.…

For example working Applebee’s is no walk in the park. Being a host was more than just a name for the job, it was a title. A title that the host carried proudly! Well not the entire host staff carried the title proudly. It was a stressful job; let me explain why it was stressful. A host must look out the window, and see the customer coming before they see them. Then they must beat the customer to the door and hold the door open for the customer. While they are holding the door for the customer with a fake smile they must…

Working has become part of the norm in today’s society for both men and women in the American culture. People waste so much of their life and time in their occupation, that it seems that is the only part of their life that is significant. Jobs revolve around the world and people are so caught up within them. Human beings are turning away from love and family, focusing on their work and not human life that is meant to be spent with loved ones. This theme of work over family has become a major issue and theme within a few poems. This idea of choosing work over life is evident within the poems “The Mill” by Edwin Arlington Robinson and “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy. Both of these poems discover what working is to that individual and how…

Swarthmore College Professor Barry Schwartz published an op-ed in last Sunday’s New York Times entitled, “Rethinking Work.” The essay begins by noting that a “survey last year found that almost 90 percent of workers were either “not engaged” with or “actively disengaged” from their jobs.” So 9 out of 10 “workers spend half their waking lives doing things they don’t really want to do in places they don’t particularly want to be.” But Why?…
