Antebellum American Culture, 18001855
The Second Great Awakening
● Revival of religious sentiment among the American people.
● Movement of large camp meetings began in kentucky early in the 1800s. And some spread to other states.
● Especially strong in upstate New York and Western pennsylvania
● Many farmers, merchants, businessmen, and women took part in the awakening as a result to the market revolution.
● Encouraged individual redemption but also societal reformation. Mormonism
● The church of the latterDay Saints, know as the Mormons,was founded in 1830 in upstate New York by Joseph Smith.
● Met by hostilely for its unorthodox techniques and practice.
● Most controversial practice was polygamy.
Temperance
● Goal of the temperance movement was to limit or even ban the production sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
● The temperance movement was especially popular among women.
● Many women were troubled by the large amount of alcohol their husbands drank
● In the preCivil War period, the American Temperance Union had some success.
● Alcohol consumption was on the rise throughout the 1800s, despite the efforts of the temperance movement.
Temperance and Nativism
● Nativism was both an emotional impulse as well as an organized movement.
The Asylum and Penitentiary Movement
● In early America, the mentally ill were often treated as common criminals, spending years behind bars.
● In the 1840s, activist, spearheaded a movement to improve treatment for the mentally ill.
● Dorothea Dix efforts let to the creation of the first generation of mental asylum in the United States.
Public Education
● Horace Mann was secretary of Education in Massachusetts in the 1840s and 1850s and also served in the U.S House of Representatives.
● Movement believed education is essential to democratic participation.
TRANSCENDENTALISM
● The movement put more stock in
