Antony Gormley is a British artist known for his metal sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. Gormley was born in London, United Kingdom in 1950. He decided to pursue art after studying anthropology and completed his studies with a postgraduate course in sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Arts.
INFLUENCES
Gormley continually tires to identify the space of art as a place in which new behaviors, thoughts and feelings can arise. Exposure was made in 2010. The public artwork is a monumental sculpture made out of metal and is 86 feet tall. The concept behind Exposure is made at made at a specific time in order to react to the changing environment over time. The figure is in a squatting position, right above the ocean. Quantum Cloud is located next to the Millennium Dome in London. The steel sculpture was completed in 1999 and is over 30 feet tall. The main idea for this piece was an open question about whether or not the body is emerging from a chaotic energy field or the field from the body. Both sculptures represent the investigate the relationship of the human body to space perfectly.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
In 1994 Gormley won the Turner Prize for contemporary art for a group of figural installations created under his direction. Gormley was also awarded the Laurence Oliver Award for the set design for Babel (Words) at Sadler’s Wells. He has been a Royal Academician since 2003 and was a Trustee of the British Museum for eight years.
