Anti Depressants Research Paper
The human body is made up of thousands of chemicals. Different chemicals regulate different functions in the body. Serotonin for instance, when located in the Gastrointestinal Tract, regulates intestinal movements. However, serotonin found in the brain effects mood levels, specifically happiness. Each chemical can perform many different functions in the body depending on the location and experiences of the cell receptor. Over thousands of years’ humans have made and found many drugs and consumed them with the intent to regulate certain functions in the body. Most of these drugs have side effects and affect everyone differently. When introducing the body with a drug such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, all of which are anti-depressants designed to maintain proper serotonin levels, other effects may occur called side effects. Side effects can occur because of other properties introduced alongside the drug or an unsuccessful attempt to properly regulate the serotonin levels. Some common side effects with anti-depressants are weight loss or gain, insomnia or day time sleeplessness, nausea, anxiety and in extreme cases increase in suicidal thoughts. People with different disease and disorders may react differently to certain drugs. …show more content…
People who suffer from a plethora of diseases such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders can benefit from increased levels of serotonin. While many people will experience some minor side effects, there will be others who experience none. Many people choose to deal with the side effects of the intended and desired effects of drugs. In recent years’ medications, have been made to cure or help with various problems such as fevers, headaches, mental disorders, abnormal hormone levels, STDS, pain management and even cancer. While some of these medicines completely rid the problems, many reduce the

Neuromodulators have been key elements in all neurological functions in the central nervous system (CNS). Those chemicals are released from a neuron affecting other groups of neurons in the CNS. Serotonin (5-HT) is a crucial neuromodulator that modulates synaptic efficacy in the nervous system. It is most well-known for its role in the brain where it plays a major part in mood, anxiety and happiness (1), it therefore, strongly affects our social life. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, many behaviors are regulated by 5-HT levels, which are in turn regulated by the presence or absence of food (2). Behavioral assays will be done on the model organism, C. elegans, to see their responses to the different stimuli, and their effects on 5-HT levels.…

Depression is caused by so many things. Anti-depressants can help, but that is not the only thing you can try. They're many other ways such as; reach out to other people, find you a good listener and sit them down and talk their head off if that is what it takes, get up and moving, if you are down and out about something, laying in bed isn't going to help solve your problems, get some exercise in and boost your diet to give you some…

It has been proven as effective, if not more, than citalopram, as improvement rates for escitalopram are significantly higher than citalopram when the overall treatment effect was studied. Escitalopram has also been shown to be superior to the SNRI duloxetine, and also equivalent to, or better than venlafaxine. Due to the minimal side effects associated with escitalopram, long term remission rates have also been found to be higher than other antidepressants as well. Patients suffering from major depressive disorder exhibit favorable tolerance to escitalopram, regardless of short or long term therapy. Most side effects were mild and temporary, which included insomnia, nausea, excessive sweating, fatigue/somnolence, dysspermatism, and decreased libido. Escitalopram has significantly lower frequencies of adverse side effects than other SSRIs and SNRIs and discontinuation symptoms are also known to be more tolerable as well. (Kirino, 2012). In conclusion, Kirino (2012) notes “Because MDD recurs readily, it is important to select antidepressant drugs that allow high therapy continuity for pharmacological treatments. The effects of escitalopram highlighted in this review indicate that it is an antidepressant drug appropriate for first-line treatment.” Overall, escitalopram provides clients with better clinical outcomes and lower long-term mental health costs…

An interesting new development is taking place in pharmacological research. Neuroscientists are picking up where they left off in 1971 and continuing their research on the psychotropic effects of psilocybin, many of which have therapeutic value. There are many ways in which psilocybin works, yet its main mechanism of action seems to be reducing activity in the amygdala via its effects on the serotonergic system. It is through this mechanism that psilocybin has the ability to improve affect, with its effects lasting months after the drug's administration. This reduces the need to take antidepressant drugs on a daily basis. However, in certain circumstances psilocybin can increase negative affect. This is due to psilocybin's ability to enhance pre-existing affect and is easily controllable in a supervised therapeutic setting. In most cases, in addition to improving…

The newer antidepressants produce similar outcomes as found with the older antidepressants but often create fewer side-effects. In fact, depressive symptoms can be temporarily suppressed by many different medications, including barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and antipsychotic medications. The beneficial effects of antidepressant medications seem to last only as long as the patients continue to take the prescribed dose” (Overholser 2006).…

Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter, a type of chemical that helps relay signals from one area of the brain to another. (Bouchez, 2007) In depressed brains, the Serotonin signal had been somehow weakened because of a chemical imbalance in the neurotransmitters. (Mukherjee, 2012) Low Serotonin levels are often attributed to anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, obesity, eating disorders, migraines, and alcohol abuse.(Integrative Psychiatry, 2012)Treatment for increasing levels of Serotonin in the brain are medication like Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil. These medications are known to work by making more serotonin in the brain. (Carver, 2002) If we have too much Serotonin you will have this feeling of bliss and it can also produce a life threatening condition known as Serotonin Syndrome. To date there have been no recorded or documented studies proving that the brain levels…

“All you optimists out there can wipe that smile off your face right now. Being miserable is the key to a longer life, says one of the most extensive studies of its type ever undertaken. Psychologists found that the most cheerful individuals, with the best sense of humour, die earlier on average than their counterparts with the set jaw and furrowed brow. The researchers also discovered that the happy souls went on to take more gambles with their health over the years. They were more likely to drink, smoke and eat badly.” (Daily Mail)…

Serotonin has a range of influences on the neurological and physiological function of the body. It has a significant influence on sensitivity to pain, emotionality, and a behavioral response to positive and negative consequences. Serotonin, along with other major neurotransmitters, is also linked with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Serotonin, or HT-5, also has an effect on sleep, eating patterns, and thermoregulation (Meyer et al., 2005). These seem to contribute to depressive symptoms in animals with depleted stores of 5-H. There are now 14 discernable types of serotonin receptor subtypes. Subtypes 2B, 2C, 4, and 6 have all been linked with depression and anxiety (Tohda et al., 2006). Recent research shows that altering 5-HT2CR mRNA to track the origin of depressive diseases may reveal conclusive information about the origin of neurochemical imbalances. (Tohda et al., 2006) There are different approaches to raise serotonin levels in the brain to normal levels. The most commonly prescribed antidepressants are classified as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. SSRIs regulate the serotonin transporter, SERT, which slows the reuptake of the neurotransmitter into the presynpatic terminals. While new, more effective drugs with fewer side effects are being deliberated there have been newer ways to attempt to regulate serotonin imbalances. A recent discovery of small interfering RNA molecules may drastically change the treatment of depression and all other neurological diseases. Specially designed siRNA can be used to alter mRNA which will alter the translated protein. This process can be used to silence or increase the potency of its targeted protein (Thakker et al., 2006).…

Change in the body weight is a common effect of antidepressants substances use. Some studies based on antidepressant drugs have been done and they demonstrate that these medications can act as potential factors to increase or decrease weight. The tricycle antidepressant types such as amitriptyline are more likely to intensify and promote weight gain. On the other hand, substances like fluoxetine, paroxetine and sibutramine might lead to weight loss. There are many contrasts when it comes to the mechanism responsible for these variations in body mass. However, it is known that the weight rise can be the cause of different unwelcome future consequences such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and other chronicle diseases. When it comes to weight decrease, the antidepressant drug problems are related to nervous system stimulation and it is at this point that the use of diet pills comes from. Most diet pills contain antidepressant constituents that have the power to act in the metabolism as thermogenic and in the activity of neurotransmitters increasing weight loss very quickly. This literature review will discuss the association between weight changes, antidepressant and diet pill intake and their consequences to users. In particular, it will relate the evidences and show the literature contrasts about the usage of antidepressants either as a medication or as a diet pill component.…

Antidepressants result in the death of over 40,000 people each year (Mercola).Due to a fundamental misunderstanding of what depression is and how it should be treated, people who do not need them are often prescribed antidepressants by doctors. The result is dire. A ban against the use of antidepressants would prevent the deaths and health problems of hundreds of thousands of people (Mercola). However, there is a minority of people with chronic depression for whom the use of antidepressants prevents an early death and allows them to better function. Therefore doctors should prescribe antidepressants sparingly and with great caution, using them as a last resort in order to prevent a death. Alternative methods must be used to treat depression,…

Antidepressants are one way people can contest depression. All antidepressants work by increasing the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. This may be so, however antidepressants work differently and achieve different effects depending on the chemical composition of the antidepressant, which determines which neurotransmitter is affected. There are many types of antidepressants, including tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Some side effects of depressant relieving drugs can cause heart problems, weight problems, and even raise the risk of suicide in adolescents. Antidepressants are not the only way to relieve depression. Diet, exercise, and psychotherapy can also help alleviate depression. However, not all people can have or attain access to antidepressants. Suicide is a deadly effect of depression. This may be so, however it is possible to prevent this deadly effect. There are many strategies that have been conceived to help prevent a person from committing suicide. Identifying certain signs suicidal people give and intervening before behaviors escalate is one strategy that health professionals have formulated, Outward expressions of depression and suicidal thoughts are some of the most common signs that a person is thinking of, or is going to, commit suicide. However, not all people…

The World Health Organization considers depression to be a leading cause of disability worldwide. “People routinely say that depression is the worst thing that’s happened to them,” Coplan says. “And the reason that’s offered is that their brains don't work properly. They can’t make decisions and they aren’t sure of themselves — everything requires huge mental effort.” (Vann, 2017, p. 2). Since people claim depression is similar to a tragedy in their life, treatment is necessary to overcome this obstacle. Treatments for depression are important for improving mental and physical health. Antidepressants are drugs used for treating excessive depressive episodes. However, antidepressants are not only for depressive conditions, but also other disorders…

Pain-killers, antidepressants and tranquilizers are chemicals that affect the activity of neurotransmitters in our body. Neurotransmitters ultimately affect our emotions. Here is how: A research conducted on 11 participants which “compared amygdala activation in response to masked emotional faces before and after antidepressant treatment”(Sheline 251) was observed by using fMRI scanning. The “amygdala is the integrative center for emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation” (Wright). Sheline concluded that “Depressed patients had exaggerated left amygdala activation to all faces, greater for fearful faces. Right amygdala did not differ from control subjects. Following treatment, patients had bilateral reduced amygdala activation to masked fearful faces and bilateral reduced amygdala activation to all faces. Control subjects had no differences between the two scanning sessions.” (Sheline, 651). This comes to show that chemicals can activate and deactivate certain parts of the brain, ultimately affecting the emotions of human beings. However, these drugs also carry negative side effects with it, such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and the anxiety felt by the discontinuation of it, states Ferguson (22). “A diversity of better-targeted drugs is on its way, and many will be tailored to the individual” (Martin, 261). Martin (265) states that in…
