Anxiety Disorders
A psychological disorder, also referred to as a mental disorder, is an ongoing behavioral pattern, thoughts, feelings or actions that are deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional. It impacts multiple life areas which create hardships for the person experiencing these symptoms that can seriously affect your day-to-day function in life and interfere with your ability to interact in society (Unknown, Psychological Disorders-Symptoms, Causes, Treatments). While the causes of psychological disorders are unknown, and some are varied, assessments and evaluations are done by psychiatrists and therapists. “Anxiety disorder is a general term that describes fears that are irrational or not based on fact. There are different types of anxiety disorders, which are phobias, general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anxiety is a normal emotion that everyone experiences in our daily life. It is an anxious or nervous feeling you experience whether it’s during taking a test, speaking in public, hearing bad news, or even looking at someone in the eye while talking. People with general anxiety disorder tend to worry about unrealistic situations or expect a disaster, worry about life, money, school, family, amongst other things. They suffer from symptoms like sweating, jitters, more tense, on edge, twitching eyelids, which can lead to serious health issues like high blood pressure. They have trouble getting through the day, are sleep deprived, and living in constant fear and worry. According to Sigmund Freud, “the anxiety is free-floating. General Anxiety disorder and depression go hand in hand, but even without depression this disorder tends to be disabling” (Myers). Women are mostly diagnosed with general anxiety disorder more than men. Many people with generalized anxiety disorder were treated badly and inhibited as children (Myers). In order to be diagnosed with this condition, symptoms must be persistent in a period of six months. Treatments such as psychotherapy are very useful to help cope with those who suffer from general anxiety
