Apple’s iPod is the market leader in digital music1.In United States (US); it holds about 76% of the market and 70% globally. In 2006, it was the first digital music player to be integrated into an American automobile2.This increased the sales of iPod and profits of Apple in general. The launch of its newer generation has immensely increased the profits of Apple.
In 2007, with the increase market shares of the iPods, Apple launched the iPhone to reduce the number of electronic gadgets one had to carry. The iPhone was able to generate 27% of the market shares that was dominated by Nokia. In 2008, when it released the iPhone 3G, with an improvement in its interface and Operating System (OS), it forced its major competitors Nokia (N900 and later N97) and Blackberry to launch new products which was not a match to the iPhone which sold 700,000 pieces in its first week. Apple gained a 2% market share with its iPhone whereas Nokia lost 5.3% of its market share. A 2010 best touch screen Smartphone review puts the iphone 4 tops ahead of Nokia N8 which was launched to compete with the iPhone.3
Apple has expanded so much in Research and Development (R&D) that in April, 2010 when it launched its much awaited tablet personal computer (PC), the iPad,it sold one million pieces in 28 days4. It is currently the market leader in the tablet PC, a market segment Nokia is yet to venture into which undoubtedly will be a strong market for Nokia to capture. Its major competitor now is Samsung with the Galaxy tab.
Apple’s OS is currently ranked fifth based on National Purchase Diary (NPD) market research. It follows the likes of Symbian OS, Android, RIM and Apple. In 2009, Nokia spent US$1.9 billion to upgrade its Symbian ‘4’ to double up its platform base and also rolling up with MeeGo.its no doubt Nokia still remains the market leader in the Smartphone market. Apple would have to increase its spending to develop its OS to be able to overtake the like of Android, RIM
