Learning Area: 2. Heat
Learning Objective:
2.4 Applying the principles of expansion and contraction of matter
Learning Outcome:
A student is able to:
• Apply principle of expansion and contraction of matter in solving simple problems
Materials: Activity sheets 1 – 5. (provided to the groups during the previous class),mahjong papers and marker pens, LCD projector
Teacher:
Good morning boys and girls.
What have you learnt yesterday?
Teacher waits and listens to students’ response.
Good, now let me show you some examples related to the principle of expansion and contraction of matter in solving simple problems.
Teacher shows the following graphics.
(gaps in railway tracks, rollers in steel bridges, gap in concrete highways, Joints between metal plates in construction works, bimetallic strips in fire-alarms, thermostat, steel railway wheels)
Now let us enjoy ourselves with more examples related to the principles of expansion and contraction of matter by watching five short sketches.
Each group will be provided with mahjong paper and a marker pen.
Please identify and write down the keywords related to the concept learnt while you are watching. Remember, marks will be given to the sketches and keywords.
Are you all ready? So, we shall begin the sketch. Enjoy yourselves.
Students get into groups. Each group is given 5-10 minutes to present their short sketch. Other groups will watch and write the keywords related to the principles of expansion and contraction on their mahjong paper.
Note: Keywords are underlined.
At the end of the class session:
What have you learnt just now?
(Teacher waits and listens to students’ responses.)
Now let us see which group gets the most keywords right.
The points will be added to the group’s performance.
Teacher and students will count the correct keywords for every group .
Now, I am going to announce the winners of our competition.
The third place is awarded to group
