“Appoggio” means “to lean on,” or in other words, the ability to train your muscles to have a balanced airflow through inhalation and exhalation. In order to do this, you must have a stable rib cage, a stable sternum, and a noble posture. I would describe “appoggio” to a friend using a seesaw analogy. To achieve a legato or “smooth” sound with a lot of warm color, you have to rock with ease between inhalation and exhalation.
