Archimedes During The Siege Of Syracuse
Archimedes

The genius who changed our way of thinking forever. Thesis Statement

Archimedes was a genius because of his discoveries in the scientific world, including the lever and the idea that items displace their weight in water.

● One of Archimedes’s great achievements was the water screw (background) which is an ingenious way of getting water from a “low-lying body of water into irrigation systems”. ● During the siege of Syracuse by the Romans, Archimedes developed a type of large claw or beak that extended from a crane of sorts, grabbed onto enemy boat and either capsized it or threw it unexpectedly back down.

● Among the greatest of Archimedes’s famous war machines was the Architonnerre which is a giant steam-powered cannon.

Alcibiades was born in 450 BC in ancient Athens. He was the child of Cleinias and Deinomache. Through his mother, Deinomache, Alcibiades belonged to a very wealthy and powerful family. Alcibiades himself first began to develop into a powerful figure through deception. He was offended when the Spartans overlooked him due to his youth and settled on a treaty agreement with Nicias and Laches instead. Alcibiades seized the chance to go behind the Athenian Assembly’s back by taking ambassadors under his wing and turning them against the Assembly as well. Soon after, Alcibiades was appointed General and began to threaten Sparta’s authority by grouping with other nearby states in the Peloponnese. However, this union was eventually vanquished in the Battle of Mantinea.…

Thales of Miletus (c. 624 BC – c. 546 BC) was said to be the first known scientific thinker. Thales was both important and extremely influential. He wanted an explanation without turning to supernatural powers. Thales attempted to explain natural phenomena without reference to mythology. Other philosophers admired his way of thinking and followed him in attempting to explain substance change, and the existence of the world. Thales had two strong beliefs. They were that that “nature must be understood without the supernatural and that humans are capable of discovering nature’s truths through observation and reason” (Adler 33). He was credited to be the first to bring geometry and astronomy to Greece from Egypt. He was best known for his supposed prediction of a solar eclipse that marked the end of the war. “He was able to change the course of a river so an army could cross it” (Adler 31). He claimed that the earth was a flat disk and that an earthquake was caused by a wave in the water. He identified water as the basis of the universe. Thales set a trend for fundamental…

The Claw of Archimedes is a weapon that he is said to have designed in order to defend the city of Syracuse in a siege. The claw consisted of a crane-like arm from which a large metal grappling hook was suspended. When the claw was dropped onto an attacking ship the arm would swing upwards, lifting the ship out of the water and possibly sinking it. Archimedes may have had it inspired by his law of the lever:…

Otto Von Guericke, born November 20, 1601 in Madgeburg, Germany. He is one of the most famous scientists of all time. In 1650 he invented a “vacuum pump” it consisted of a piston and an air gun cylinder. Attached to the cylinder were two- way flaps that were designed to pull air out of whatever it would have been connected to. He used it to investigate the properties of the vacuum in a lot of his experiments. He also demonstrated the force of air pressure with extreme and dramatic experiments. One of his biggest accomplishments was that he proved that substances were not pulled by a vacuum, but were actually pushed by the pressure of the surrounding fluids or air.…

The objective of this experiment is to use the Archimedes principle to evaluate the specific weight of all of the separate materials. This objective of this experiment is significant in that it gives valuable information on how to determine the material composition of an object when given very vague information. From information learned in the accompanying Fluid Mechanics lecture course, basic formulas can be applied to solve for the specific weight of the object in question. The experiment performed will involve the buoyancy principle and include calculating the volume displaced of a submerged object.…
