Many ideas and objects can be improved. That is just what the successes John Deere and Lewis Latimer did. In the articles “A Sticky Problem for Farmers” by Nathan Aaseng and “Lewis Latimer” by Stephen Currie, the main characters both have creative ideas, but they are different in their paths to success. “A Sticky Problem For Farmers” explains the difficulties of farming the Midwest, and how one man, named John Deere, helped by inventing a new plow. “Lewis Latimer” shows the willpower and creativity of a black man working in a white community. Both John Deere and Lewis Latimer had different, new ideas that would change the way certain people lived.…

What about the chickens? Some kids grow up in the big cities without having any contact with the rural areas, with the plantations of fruits and vegetables and with animals. Small farmers are giving up on their farms everyday, because the big corporations are crushing them with their prices. Less than one percent of the Americans are farmers; one in every four farmers is able to generate gross revenue higher than 50,000 dollars a year. "A full vindication of measures of Congress" is one of Alexander Hamilton's first published letters, in response to the letter of " A Westchester Farmer", which accuses the actions of the first Continental Congress. Hamilton starts the letter with defending decisions and actions of the Congress, and disproving the "Farmer's" accusations by logically and precisely responding to his main points, with facts and examples. Then, he proves how the Congress has recommended the only effective way to secure Colonial security and establish a solid future, mainly by boycotting all trades with the British empire and gaining independence. Hamilton then, addresses the farmers of New York directly and talks them…
The common thread that ties more than a century of wheat farming together in the Kalcevic family is perseverance. With agriculture experience that starts with memories of feeding team horses to hitch to moldboard plows to prepare the fields for planting, brothers Jim and John Kalcevic’s farming story is one of family, innovation, and most importantly, perseverance. As the third generation of Kalcevic Family Farms, Jim and Johnny have seen the agricultural industry transform from an enterprise of “Just wanting to feed your own family,” says Jim, to quite literally helping to provide food for the world. When asked how they have been able to keep the family business successful through five generations, Jim and Johnny are in agreement: honor…
How many times has the US population heard that large farms are more productive than small farms? The public perception is heavily influenced by the media. The most common stance on small farm economics is usually sided with the large corporate farms, especially in large court battles. Here in the United States, the question was asked more than a half-century ago: what does the growth of large-scale, industrial agriculture mean for rural towns and communities? Small family owned and operated farms are still alive in America today through opposition to factory farms, incentives from the United States government, the controversy over animal rights, and the awareness of the slow food movement.…
I am a 4th generation farmer. My great grandparents bought our farm from more distant relatives making it a dairy farm. My grandfather then took over the farm from his parents continuing with the dairy farming. My Uncle Nick mostly runs the farm now, a Holstein beef farm, with my grandfather doing little and myself doing whatever I can. We farm on about 80 acres. I work on the farm almost 24/7 in the summer, but in the winter I work only on weekends. We raise about 20 steers at a time selling them to family and friends. We personally don’t have any hired workers. All we have is family that works whenever they can. Many people say that corporate farms are doing the US and Wisconsin good in both producing…

The current Farm Bill is set to expire in 2012 and in this climate of spending reductions and budget balancing, there has been a lot of talk about reducing or eliminating many farm subsidies. Now heading to Iowa the heart of the corn producing region, to grow and track what happens to corn. They become aware of a shocking truth. The majority of corn grown within this country is inedible until processing; also, previously stripped of most of its nutrients, due to the genetic engineering that allows the corn in denser populations. Compared to a couple generations ago, farmers would marvel over 40 bushels an acre; today’s generation is procuring 180 bushels from that same acre, producing roughly 5 tons of food. The corn is then processed into animal feed,…
