ARGUMENT FOR THE LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA
As of December 1, 2013 twenty-one states have decriminalized marijuana possession, with seven states allowing legal medical use of the drug and two states allowing legal use of the drug without medical necessity. Legality of the drug would lower prices significantly, allowing users an affordable high, preventing associated crime such as burglary, theft, and sale of other and more dangerous drugs. A study by the Fraser Institute has shown that a gram of marijuana on the street is sold for $17.20, while its production costs only were $3.40, leaving room for profit and a tax providing revenue to entrepreneurs and the government. When you consider where drug profits currently land, what is used to currently support terrorism could be used to build schools and pay public servants. Without the need to apprehend, arrest, process, convict, and incarcerate marijuana users and dealers, police and court resources could be freed to process other, more serious crimes with the exception of other drug related crimes such as drug disputes. Drug dealers will sell to anyone, anywhere, anytime; with legalization restrictions such as age can be put into place preventing sales to children. It would be morally wrong for state and federal governments to support such an immoral and dangerous activity. Drugs control their users, not the other way around, and with so many falling victim to addiction, without a cure; legalization would lead more to picking up the drug, and falling victim not less.
