Many schools throughout the Nation have discussed whether they should abolish sports as an after-school activity. Studies show that the withdraw of sports would provide more recognition to the other clubs and groups of schools that are more academically focused. Therefore, schools in the United States should cancel sports because it would place the focus specifically on academics, the elimination of sports would cut costs, and more study time would be provided.
Although several universities throughout America are the first choice for immigrants across the globe, keeping sports in our schools has prevented the nation from achieving as much academic success as possible. According to the article “Yes! It’s Time to Scale Back,” by Amanda Ripley, “more than 20 nations have better high school graduation rates” than schools in United States (10). She also states “the emphasis on sports has gone too far” (Ripley 10). This shows that American schools may not be putting enough stress on the importance of academics, as they are doing with sports. In the article, it is explicitly stated that, “Distraction may be the biggest cost of all, ” (Ripley 10). Ripley also references the outcome of one school in Premont Independent School District when she says, “That first semester, 80 percent of students passed their classes compared to 50 percent the previous fall ”(10). This proves that as soon as the distraction was removed, students’ test scores skyrocketed because sports were no longer an interference with their time to study.
