This poses the question: What possesses someone to get behind the wheel after having even just one drink? In 2006 my family received a phone call that we were never expecting. A collect phone call came in from the Hamilton County Jail asking if we wanted to accept a call from Justin Haggard, my brother. I say yes, and immediately he starts in saying “Haleigh, don’t hand the phone to mom, just tell her I’m in jail and I need bailed out at five.” According to alcoholalert.com a full forty percent of the population will have their lives affected by drunk driving, whether by their own hand, or another driver. Death isn’t the one only consequence of drinking and driving the repercussions often reach further than just what one can see. According to statistics by SADD or students against destructive decisions, alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than a third (37%) have done so by eighth grade.
