Good Morning Mrs Arnold and fellow classmates today I'm here to talk to you about a very serious problem that has been going on for far too long and that issue is American gun violence.
When I investigated this issue I was appalled by how poorly the American government have addressed this serious issue. My main reasons for addressing this point is the Private sale loophole, The large amount of gun related deaths and the Nation Rifle Association.
Even though it states in the second amendment that it is “The right of the people to bear arms…” the American constitution has been amended 17 times since it establishment in 1791. At one point the constitution protected the rights of slaves owners so to appease the southern states that continued to use slaves for farming up until 1865. There was also the eighteenth …show more content…
amendment which was established during 1920 and banned the production, transport and sale of alcohol though not the act of drinking it. This amendment was in effect until 1933 where the 23rd amendment was passed and alcohol was legalized once again. America obviously has a lot of catching up to do if they think that their second amendment is written in stone.
Recently many Americans have been asking why their country seems to have such high crime rates compared to other countries and the simple answer is that in america guns can be bought anywhere and have became symbolised as problem solvers instead of weapons capable of taking multiple lives in the blink of an eye.
Although gun laws in america currently state that anyone who buys a gun from a registered dealer must have their background checked this is not the same for private sellers who can sell guns online to others without asking or caring for a background check or mental health report.
In a report done The law center to prevent gun violence it was stated that 67% of private gun sellers were willing to sell guns to people who had expressed that they probably couldn’t pass the mental health check done by the government. This loophole in the law has allowed numerous criminals to buy guns and has made it far easier for criminals and mentally unstable people to get their hands on weapons capable of killing many people in mere seconds. Yet many Americans think that by stopping private gun sales or by making it illegal to sell guns without having a government background check done on the buyer it will somehow reduce their rights to use guns the way they see fit. Buying a gun in America is simply far to easy and has resulted in unsavory people getting their hands on weapons capable of vast murder.
Statistically speaking if you were to move to America right now you would be three and a half times more likely to be murdered and twice more likely to be robbed. While Americans say that more guns equal more protection countries like Australia and japan have proven this theory wrong as the the amount of guns owned in both these countries are some of lowest in the world yet there crime rate and murder rate are both eclipsed by America’s.
Perhaps the largest problem americans face is the National Rifle Association or more commonly known as the NRA.
This Organization is one of the most powerful political powers in America and also the biggest hurdle for any kind of law passing to stop guns from being used inappropriately. The NRA receives millions of dollars in donations every year and is extremely radical when it comes to guns. Because of their influence they have been able to cause a 96% fall in gun related statistics since the mid-1990’s making it extremely hard for pro-gun control activists to use any facts or statistics in there arguments against the NRA. By using their wealth and power the gun lobby has been able to prevent many acts of gun control and has made frequent jabs at how the gun laws in Australia have caused us to become soft and victims to our government. Yet Australia is seen as one of the most livable countries in the world with extremely low gun related crimes. It is easy to see that Americans still value property over lives which has lead the American people into a false sent of
safety.
Its obvious from my previous statement that the lope hole in private gun sales as well as the ignorance of the total gun deaths and the NRA have lead the American people to believing in guns as tools of protection instead of the lethal weapons they have shown themselves to be. I hope that you can all plainly see the serious problem America has with their love of guns and they way in which they use them so freely.
