All over the world there are people who are ‘different.’ These people who society labels ‘different’ experience prejudice, discrimination, and sometimes-even violence for their race, skin color, or religious belief. In Africa when a black mother and father give birth to a white child they either try to get rid of it because they don’t believe it’s theirs or they understand that their child is albino. Being albino means having no skin or hair pigmentation due to lack of melanin production. If you are albino in Africa you are subject to a life of fear and rejection by many people. In Africa more than 100 albinos have been violently attacked in Tanzania from 2006 to June 2012 and many other cases not reported. This is happening because of the belief that the body parts of albinos are believed to contain power and riches. The prosecution of albinos has been happening for many years beyond many could recall. Many children are taught when they are young the beliefs about albinos such as that albinos don’t die; they disappear (Spell of the Albino). Many people also believe that if you have a disease and you have sex with an albino your disease will be cured, which has increased incidences of rape (PhotoPhilanthropy). Some also believe albinism is contagious (npr.org). With the rate of attacks of albinos increasing the parliament in Tanzania has decided to ban witchdoctors from practicing, they have also made the killing of albinos a crime so those who are convicted get the death penalty and any court case involving albinos have been granted a priority so there will be faster justice for albinos. Parliament has also created nine “safe haven” or protectorate centers for children and adults with albinism. There’s one in western Tanzania, this is called the Kabanga Protectorate Center and
