The research network on socioeconomic status and health give much information on this topic. Increasing the number of Americans with a college degree would help our economy recover faster and also help the U.S. recover its competitive edge. J. Noah Brown, CEO of Community College Trustees, represents 1200 schools nation wide has pledged 12$ million dollars to community colleges to try and boost enrollment rates. The community-college tuition initiative by President Obama is a subject to unusual superlatives as it seeks to universalize two years of college. The plan integrates policies that attempt to narrow educational disparities that are characteristics of growing socioeconomic inequality in the United States. In this sense, the purported Obama tuition plan sought to facilitate an increase in the attendance of college students, therefore ensuring higher graduation rates with less debt compared to the current curriculum. The ideal, rendered most Republicans allergic to the ideology as it carried a 10-year price tag of $60 billion that included state and federal components (Alexander). However, the plan is already a subject to criticism due to its failure to account for the fact that few students under the current college…

In the dissertation, “Should Everyone Go To College”, the authors Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill make the stance that a college degree can be beneficial for some, but not for all people. It is true that people with bachelor’s degrees make more money than high school graduates. A college education positively affects ones job satisfaction, health, marriage, parenting, trust, and social interaction. College also improves crime rates and political input in society. Lifetime earnings are $570,000 for a bachelor’s degree and $170,000 for an associate’s degree. Despite this, not all students see a large profit on their investment. With tuition rates rising, student loans are close to $1 trillion. Some aspects that can influence the return on…

Students are affected by this increase because they are forced to take out larger loans, work full time or may even have to take fewer classes. They face opportunity costs because they are willing to sacrifice working for school hoping that school will help them more in the end. This increase not only affects the student, but the parents as well, that means that taxpayers are subsidizing a smaller share of the cost of their state universities, while students and their parents are paying an even larger slice. State funding now accounts for about 36% of revenues at public colleges, down from 45% in 1980, while tuition accounts for 19% of state university revenue, up from 13% twenty years ago.…

In the Huffington Post they say that college is not worth the debt that you come out with, many people think that college is a waste of time and you come out with more debt than you will be earning in your year salary. Well they are wrong, yes you come out with roughly $24, 804 in debt of student loans for the average person getting a bachelor’s degree. You will start out $66, 200, that is $26, 150 more than someone with a high school diploma would earn in one year. Even if you paid off your student loans in that one year with $66, 200 you would still make more money in one year, while paying off all your student loans in one year, than someone with no student loans and only a high school diploma. So you tell me which sounds like a better option, making $41, 396 and paying off ALL student loans and still make more money than someone with only a high school diploma, or only making $40, 050, not paying loans? Personally…

America has been competing with other nations for many purposes, such as in the education race. If the America decides to have free community college, then the amount of people with degrees will increase, raising stakes against other nations. Goldrick-Rab writes that “...enrolling [low income high school graduates] in community college [raises] their odds in earning bachelor’s degrees,” which will then allow these students to earn more money in order to help their families. There has been a study in which one of the reasons why first generation students attend college is because of the need to help the financial status of the family. Two years of FREE community college! In theory, this sounds like a really good idea, and would give numerous people, who would otherwise not have the option to continue his education, the opportunity to get a good start on his college degree. President Obama has proposed a two year, free community college plan. in his speech given at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville, Tennessee, President Obama stated, a college education should be “as free and universal as high school is today” (Korte). High school is not free. Tax paying citizens pay for children to get a high school education. College should be more affordable for those who wish to pursue a higher education, but the President’s plan will not work; there are too many expenses that would not allow the nation to support every college student who attends a two year college. There are too many questions and concerns about offering two years of free higher education to everyone. College is not for everyone, and certainly will…

During the 2016 presidential election, the debate of whether or not college tuition should be free was a popular one. Although none of the candidates who used it as part of their platform were elected, it remains a popular topic of discussion, especially resonating with college-aged students and those who are still recovering from college debt. Additionally, the socio-economic divide is at an all-time high, and much of it is due to college not being accessible to lower-class individuals. In order to lessen the growing socio-economic divide, college tuition should be free.…

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines the student eligibility for financial aid which tends to give aid to families that earn an income of less than 50,000 and has left a large group of middle-class families who earn more than 50,000 and less than 100,000 out without…

Although increasing the cost of tuition is sought to be beneficial to the staff and faculty by being able to provide what some would consider a better quality education. As well as provide some students with a sense of motivation due to the high cost, as some wouldn’t be able to afford to fail in school. It is evident that an increase in tuition would simply, create a higher student loan debt, cause a slash in state funding and even bring about some discouragement to students.…

A reason college should cost less is that many students may drop out because they can not afford college. Students that come from a lower income family background are more likely to drop out and never finish college due to financial reasons. 30% of college and university students drop out the first year. And 60% of that number has no help from parents paying tuition (according to www.collegeatlas.org). What if the tuition was lower? Perhaps that percentage would be lower. Also those who do not earn a college degree are twice as likely to be unemployed as those who have one (www.collegeatlas.org). Our country’s future is depending on the kids in college and the ones who will be going to college soon, and those who do not earn degrees may not…
