Argumentative Essay: Should Community Colleges Be Free?
Whenever someone hears about something being free, they either become interested and accept the free item or they become skeptical about, deciding whether or not it’s a scam of some sort. The idea of having community college be free has been in debate for quite some time. So, should community college be free? I believe it should not, however, the costs of colleges should be lowered in order to accommodate for the needs of the student. Obama has proposed the idea of having community college be free in order to increase the number of people to own a degree. Joanne Jacobs writes in her article about free community college that “The White House estimates that this would cost $60 billion for over 10 years” to execute. With our economy in shambles at the moment, this can worsen the economic status of the country, adding to the drastic debt that continuously rises on a daily basis. If Obama creates some sort of promise about tuition being free, then another issue could arise, which is having schools become more crowded than what they already are. If the America decides to have free community college, then the amount of people with degrees will increase, raising stakes against other nations. Goldrick-Rab writes that “...enrolling [low income high school graduates] in community college [raises] their odds in earning bachelor’s degrees,” which will then allow these students to earn more money in order to help their families. There has been a study in which one of the reasons why first generation students attend college is because of the need to help the financial status of the family. If the student decides to earn a bachelor’s degree, then the family will be able to escape their financial
