Recently, it was announced that the President is trying to make community college free for all.Most of my friends will be going to community college next year. Some are going there because it was the only option for them to further their education, others because they did not have enough financial help to go to a four-year college. So wouldn’t a free community college have a good impact on them? Supporters of this idea say that it can persuade more people to go to college and get more financial diversity into the community colleges. What they don’t see is the horrible repercussions that those effects will have in the education system that can easily deter people from getting a good education and will instead have hopeful low-income students get a mediocre education. …show more content…
She believes that by offering free education to all students from all incomes, community colleges will become more diverse and will, therefore, “could gain political capital and the funding… that would help everyone”. Sure, it might sound amazing but this is a very doubtful hypothesis. The idea of free college will bring more diverse students, that’s a sure thing, but the truth is all it will really do is bring more competition to community colleges. The “middle- and upper-middle-class students could be competing for spots with low- income students” at already overpopulated and underfunded schools. Michele Siqueiros, president of The Campaign for College Opportunity, pushed it far as to say that “one population ends up pushing out another” and I highly doubt that the low-income students will emerge victorious over the more funded
