A proctor is a responsible adult at or over the age of 21. They are basically the “eyes and ears” of the University of the People. Their function is to properly identify the student, verifying identity through proper credentials of identification. A passport and driver's license would probably be 2 good means of ID, as they contain all necessary criteria. The proctor is necessary to supervise the exam, and ensure there is no cheating. Consultation with another party, or access to prohibited information would be 2 prime examples of cheating. Personal comment: "We're here to learn, not cheat".
According to the University of the People Student Handbook, (2015, pg 48), “A proctor should be a responsible adult, such as …show more content…
a local official, supervisor at work, librarian, or a religious figure”. They should also have a good internet connection, email, and be there when it's time for the exam! They can't be related to you, or be a fellow student. It's kind of common sense that they should be someone who was, or is in a position of high regard or responsibility.
Registering your proctor is easy.
When registering for your course online, you will immediately know if the course will require a proctor. There will be a link in place to the side of the course that will take you to the information area to add the proctor. All of the expected and usual information will be required. First name, last name and pertinent contact information: including residential address, telephone number and email address.
I would highly recommend getting together with your prospective proctor over lunch, or a just cup of coffee, or at least calling your prospect, and explaining the details of the process to them. This will avoid any surprises, and more easily answer any questions that may arise. Also, it is vital to impress upon them that this is a commitment of time and energy on their part that you cannot compensate them for in any way.
After the above-mentioned personal information is sent to the University, the prospective proctor will receive a return email, which must be answered and affirmed. My first choice for a proctor is going to be a woman named Carole Barra, she is a retired insurance executive, and also a retired school teacher. She taught 6th grade math. She's computer-literate, uses email, super smart, and of very high moral character. She's a no-nonsense kind of person. I think she'll do. I haven't asked her yet, but I think she will be honored to be my first choice. - 437
