In 1935, Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz performed a brain operation called “lobotomy”.This was the first ever operation that treated mental illness involving drilling holes in the skull. For the work, Antonio Egas Moniz received a Nobel Prize in medicine in 1949. The idea for this operation was that mental health could be improved by psychosurgery. Burckhardt had operated on six patients with a mental illness and report a 50 percent success rate. Many people harshly criticized his work and did not fully accepted his work at the time.
