Pro-life advocates have many viewpoints regarding abortion and the reasons as to a woman should not terminate her pregnancy.
Advocators of pro-life favor the unborn child’s life over the woman’s right to choose. Pro-life advocates argue that it is morally inhumane to kill an unborn child. Religious beliefs have an impact as well, tying into morality. Advocates provide scientific facts that a fetal life begins at conception. Per Princeton University, “the starting point for a human life, comes into existence with the formation of the one-celled zygote, which is formed by the union of an ovum and a sperm.” (Princeton University, Larson William J., 1997) With the support of facts as such, advocates of pro-life state that an unborn child’s life begins before they are out of the womb, therefore you are murdering the child. Not only do pro-life advocates strongly state their beliefs, they also provide alternatives to abortion. One obvious option is adoption. Advocates state that there are many couples that miscarry, or cannot carry a child of their own, etc., therefore adoption may be an option for
them.
With every controversial topic, there is also an opposing side. The opposing side to advocates of pro-life is advocates of pro-choice. Pro-choice advocates states that a woman has the right to her body and what she does to it. Advocates state that pro-choice is a fundamental human right. In support of this claim, on January 22, 1973, the case of “Roe v. Wade” was decided. The court stated that, “a woman's right to an abortion fell within the right to privacy (recognized in Griswold v. Connecticut) protected by the Fourteenth Amendment.” (Roe v. Wade, 1973) Therefore, this court ruling now stated that it is a constitutional right to have an abortion. Advocates of pro-choice take into consideration if the mother’s health was being compromised due to the unborn child, she should have the right to put herself first. Finally, advocates believe that if an unintentional pregnancy occurred due to rape or other sexual abuse cases, there should be no hesitation to giving them the right to proceed with an abortion, if they wish to do so. Overall, the debate of whether abortion is humane or inhumane can continue to go on for many years. From constitutional rights, a woman's right to her body, if the circumstances were rape, etc. defending Pro-Choice. Yet, we have science and the idea of when life begins, human morals, supporting Pro-Life. With both the affirming and opposing sides of the debate stating their perspectives of the topic, there will never a final right or wrong answer, because it ties in with our individual beliefs and morals as a human and what we would like to stand for.
