It is not showing respect, but it is also causing more tension in the states.
It is because most americans disagree with Kaepernick using the National Anthem to protest racial violence and oppression. In addition, it was found in a September 2016 public opinion poll that 61% of Americans disapproved of the protests. Lots of people including a Clemson University coach, Dabo Swinney, said, “I don’t think it’s good to be a distraction to your team.” This shows a division in our country, fans, teams, players, and coaches. Dave Pete added, “While I agree that there should be equality, they are just creating more
tension.” My third and final reason is that they could protest in a better way. As Sean Gregory says, “You can protest racial inequality without offending others and disrespecting national symbols.” Army Ranger Veteran Darian Majied added, “they could have chosen a variety of other means of protests. Because these players did this to our anthem, NFL viewership went down 24%. Donald Trump also says they should do this in another way, off the field. Also, a company, Nine Line Apparel, has sold more than 30,000 “I can stand for the anthem shirts.” This all shows there are better ways to protest than disrespecting the flag. While many disagree with this movement, lots agree too. These people will argue that they have freedom of speech, which is what our country is based on. Others will say they are not being violent and not hurting anyone. This however, is wrong, because using your freedom of speech to be ill-mannered towards your country is wrong, and they are hurting our nation by causing a division between this country. To sum up, the National Anthem protests must be stopped. This must happen because they are disrespectful to the flag, it is causing lots of tension in our country, and there are better ways to protest racial equality. So, do you kneel or stand?
