Argumentative Essay: What Is A Dualist?
Also, people contain morals and goodness which tend to be valued. Not to mention, moral laws are objective realities and if this is true than physicalism would be false because both those things are non physical. Likewise, a dualist could argue that, yes the soul cannot be weighed or seen however, neither can numbers or values and they still exist. Dualist tend to be believers in religions and faiths that promise immortality of the soul and tend to not fear death because there is so much to look forward to after life on earth. I believe that a dualist has more legitimate pieces of evidence to support their claims and prove that not everything on earth is physical and material. As a society we believe in a lot of things that don’t posses a physical state such as numbers, letters, and values. How …show more content…
Also, reincarnation tends to support the sense of an afterlife because it shows that our souls can live on in another being once our physical body has died. There tends to be less evidence for this belief however, it does give people hope that there is something to believe in after death. Finally, psychics who can communicate with the dead show believers that people that have passed are still in a place where their souls can be happy. Ultimately, psychics show us that the souls of our loves ones can watch over us and can still be involved in our lives without us knowing. All of these claims however, have critics and skeptics that do not support them. Rachels in his essay “Do We Survive Death?” points out many of the criticisms for these arguments and tends to show the reader that he does not believe in an afterlife for the soul. I tended to listen to Rachels argument and take it into consideration however, I usually

Scholars such as Plato and Descartes are dualists. Dualists, unlike hard materialists believe that the body and soul are distinct things that are joined together in some way for now. They also believe that when the body dies, the soul lives on. Dualists believe that even though the body and soul are joined, they are still distinct and can live without each other.…

    2. Physicalism, also known as Materialism, states that everything that exists is ultimately physical. According to the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (published 2001) "Physicalism is the thesis that everything is physical, or as contemporary philosophers sometimes put it, that everything supervenes on, or is necessitated by, the physical." Coined by Otto Neurath in the early twentieth century in a series of papers, it is stated that "According to physicalism, the language of physics is the universal language of science and, consequently, any knowledge can be brought back to the statements on the physical objects." (Keith, J.F 2010). With regards to the mind-body problem, a physicalist would argue that responses and thoughts are purely mechanisms of the brain i.e., chemical reactions through neurotransmitters across synapses leading to an equally physical response.…

A common belief among many groups of American Indians is when a member of their tribe passes, their soul passes on into the spirit world. They believe that they will still be able to communicate with their loved one through dreams or through the intercession of medicine people (Handbook of Patients’ Spiritual, 2013). Some tribes believe the land of the afterlife is more structured with a higher being ruling over the souls that have passed on. A less common belief, but one that is still predominant in some tribes, is the belief that the dead pass on and become part of the earth if their bodies are not disturbed from peace.…

The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures; however, it does not guarantee against all searches and seizures if there is reasonable doubt. Searches are determined on two important interests. The first is the intrusion on the individual’s Fourth Amendment Rights; the second includes legitimate government interests such as national security. What constitutes a reasonable suspicion? Where must a public official draw the line? How should one address any “gray area” that might arise?…

The dualism and monism has so many strengths and weaknesses points to argue by many famous philosophers and scientists. It is because of the mind and body problem still is hard to explain it. The reason is because of different people have different views to see these two theories. For example, the Christian philosophers will agree the dualism, because they believe that our body is "wrapping", and it will be "retired". But our soul will exist after we died. In the other hand, most scientists will believe monism by science's way. It is because they believe that mind and body can't be divided into two separate substances. Because of both of those two substances will affect each other. Also, most of them will not believe that soul will exist after we died.…

Abortion is a controversy that has been argued and fought about for decades. People ask whether it’s the body of the mother or the life of the child, who is in charge? The answer to that is simple. The mother is the one in charge of her body, but while being in charge of her body she engaged in intercourse and as a result there came a baby. Now, the baby is a person too, so going forward with abortion is indeed murder. There are at least three alternatives to abortion: parenting, adoption, and interim foster care (Abortion Alternatives). Most people claim that not everyone is ready to be a parent, and they are correct. However, as was said before there are other options than just being parent. There are options that wouldn’t be murder.…

As of November 20, 2014, same –sex marriage has been legalized in 35 out of 50 U.S. states. Same-sex marriage is a hot topic which the Supreme Court is considering to legalize. Many people say a homosexual person is a sinner. The question is do homosexual people choose his or her gender? They were born that way and they are happy with their lives. Homosexual people are nothing unlike heterosexual people. They are living, they are working, and they contribute to society. Proponents state that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. On the other side, opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery downhill way that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages (gaymarriage.procon.org). All people in the world should understand the meaning of marriage, whether a same-sex marriage or a traditional marriage. For that reason, same-sex marriage should be considered as a legal marriage because it is an equal right for humankind and beneficial for society as well as preventing youth suicide.…

The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…

By examining dualism, idealism, and physicalism, it becomes clear that idealism has the best arguments in its favor and has the fewest philosophical problems. George Berkley, Rene Descartes, and J.J. C. Smart were philosophers who were trying to understand the relationship between the mind and the body. George Berkeley believed there are no mind independent objects, and that everything that exist only exist through one’s perceptions. Rene Descartes thought that the mind and body had a causal relationship. J.J.C Smart believed that all there is are psychical things, and that everything could be explained through physical terms.…
