First, my position on Cognitive Enhancement is strongly justified because I was once a recipient of sorts as A child my mother prompted my siblings and I to take our daily vitamins.
Without a fuss we did so, we also read many books, and strenuously practiced writing. As I got older I would notice that school wasn’t a burden to me compared to the majority of my peers, when explaining the ordeal to my mom, she unashamedly expressed that I had been introduced to subjects’ way before my classmates; The endless reading, writing, and frustration was a process to optimize my brain and allow me to use more thinking power at a young age, in conclusion, making simple tasks easier to
complete.
The purpose of this story is very clear, my enhancement was acquired the “old fashioned” way, in this current day and age, many new forms of technology arise, there are apps to wake you up, a program to make phone calls for you, schedule appointments, and basically act as a personal assistant, everything that is made offers the public a smoother and relaxed way to live day by day. While many fear the introduction of the enhancements and its role in the study, Dartmouth researchers argue that enhancements have been used to assist patients with ADD/ADHD or degenerative diseases, and those in study have been proven to be successful Moreover, while both parties agree that the effects are unforeseen, some studies like the study admistiered at the National Libarary of Health and Mediceine argue that cognitive enhancers can have side effects via body systems other than the brain. Thus, both AChEIs and methylphenidate frequently cause an upset stomach or nausea, sometimes leading patients to discontinue medication altogether. Which can counteract the whole point/use of the enhancement. However, Stanford alumni Brian Booster argues “We do enhancement all the time. Education is enhancement. And as a law professor, I’m not only teaching my students facts that are important to them, but ways of manipulating those facts, ways of dealing with them. That’s cognitive enhancement. And it only works if I actually change their brains.” Like Prof. Booster, Enhancement is merely conditioning the brain, like any other muscle in this ordinance the enhancement factor would work as a supplement which can be compared to a protein for the conditioning body.
In conclusion, the use of Cognitive Enhancers is beneficial and welcome in our new day and age, in times past scientist have been researching and studying the anatomy of humans only to strengthen what we have, without bias one as myself can say that yes, new things can be scary but if we are afraid to try to better ourselves for the future, why argue?
