I recently discovered a documentary called "Imagine A World Where Gay Was Normal." It was about a girl, growing up in a gay society, who was heterosexual. She was chased, beat, …show more content…
bullied, and ended up committing suicide. This puts our current situation in perspective. This movie raised the question of; why is straight normal? Why don't people have to come out as straight? Why don't their parents hate them, throw them out, and disown them? Why are LGBT people being treated as less than human? I'm sure you're tired of hearing about how people came out of the closet and how horribly their parents reacted and everything. Well I'm not going to tell you about my coming out story. Because I didn't come out, I fell out. Face first. But I have two accepting, kind, liberal parents who were there to catch me. I am so lucky.
But it is very important that we are allies for people who don't have accepting parents.
Because they are just like you. I like people that are the same gender, but I'm just like you. Some people weren't born into the right body, but they are just like you. I want to get married, just like you. I want to find love, just like you.
Approximately one in 100 American women and two in 100 American men identify as homosexual, with another four percent of Americans identifying as bisexual. Homosexuality is still a controversial topic in the United States, but polls and surveys regarding its moral acceptability or the legalization of same-sex marriage show an obvious trend towards acceptance and tolerance of the LGBT community among the American population.
But what does ALL of America's population have to do with students at Dalton? 42% of people, between the ages of 13 and 18, who are LGBT, report living in an unwelcoming environment. 80% of gay and lesbian youth report severe social isolation. 6 in 10 LGBT students report feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. The facts don't lie. LGBT people are human, just like you. Two eyes, two ears, a mouth, a nose, and a heart. We need to make a
change.
