Racism in Advertisements 2 Racism in Advertisements: Racism in commercials is so thick that one would have to live in an airtight vacuum not to choke on it. When you watch the Super Bowl, did you notice how few African Americans and Hispanics were in the commercials. These are the same commercials that have come to signify American democracy and pride throughout the world. Many commercials have portrayed blacks as cheap non-resourceful human. The effect was that advertising treated African American citizens as through they were invisible for many years, and they included them, grudgingly, for a long time almost exclusively, in massive advertising of unhealthy products such as fast food, tobacco, and alcoholic beverages. Advertisers believe when blacks appear in commercials to help assist the whites in reaching other black consumers. In an influential article, Morry Roth, Racism in Advertisements 3 "Blacks Inroads Broadcasting"�(1985) argued that Afro Americans would advertise deodorant these days, as well as sanitary napkins , bras and just about anything else you can imagine. These products pitch is more revolutionary than you might think. Thirty years ago, as inside civil right movements joke was that Americans would have almost totally recovered from racism when black people were used in hygiene ads, since racist stereo types clustered around the notion that Negroes were dirty and smelled bad. In many other advertisements blacks seem to be targeted by advertisers especially in fast food commercials. For an example in a Burger King commercial it portrays blacks as very cheap and lazy people. A black lady is going on a bus, and the advertisers make it seem like she only has one dollar to get on the bus, she then sees the Burger King sign and decides to eat a single burger.     Sociology of Consumption: “Killing Us Softly” Course Code: AHSS 1050 “Killing Us Softly”, is a documentary that explains the effects of advertising. As mentioned in the video, on a daily basis we are exposed to nearly 1 500 ads a day, and it is evident not all the ads are watched, however they do manage to make it to the back of our heads. So even if we do not pay close attention to what the ad is saying, if the product that was being advertised comes in front of us we still manage to remember that we had seen the product advertisement earlier. The documentary takes a further look at the main reason why ads are made, and the conclusion made is that when products don’t sell, ads are made in the sense, telling their customers they need the product or else they are incomplete. I believe this is a general fact, everyone know that the main needs of any person are, some type of clothes to cover their body, food to eat, water to drink and some sort of shelter. However, when these ads are presented they create an urge in the sense the person believes that have to have the product being advertised. The example given in the documentary was of ageing creams. They are advertised in a way that older aged women feel they have to have the cream or else there is something wrong with them. Another example, is straightening irons, the traditional way of straightening hair is using a hair dryer, or any ordinary straightening iron sold at the store. However, there certain brands advertised in which people believe they are better which is not true. Even though all brands are the same, just because of the ad people believe one is better than the other and that is the only one they want. So when markets say ads sell more than product, concepts, thoughts and values, this is what they refer to.     In Leslie Savan’s essay “What’s Black, Then White, and Said All Over?”, Savan writes about the importance of African American vernacular in the United States today. Black English has ultimately changed society with new terms and slangs. For instance, such slangs as “yo, what’s hanging, chill out, hook up, ain’t, ight ” and many more, have been adapted in day-to-day conversations, songs, magazines, and television causing a tremendous change in marketing. Although black slang has positively affected many companies by reaching out to young audiences through advertisements, not every commercial was pleasing to the crowd. The website www.wwnorton.com mentions a certain example. A man by the name of Sylvester Brown Jr. from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, talks about a certain commercial he saw on television a few years back that was trying to reach out to the African American audience. When Brown saw a car commercial showing a group of young blacks dancing to the “Electric Slide” while a car drove by, he recalled asking himself “What does the Electric Slide have to do with cars?”. Commercials such as these seem to draw consumers away instead of reeling them in. Another case has been with the new 2010 Toyota commercial. On the website www.theurbandaily.com , writers angrily talk about how many viewers were offended by the new Toyota rap commercial and how it was mocking black slang. To many people in the audience, the commercial seemed to have “killed” the term “Swagger”. Many advertisers do not seem to take in consideration that certain approaches using black slang can be condescending and disrespectful to African Americans, causing their company to lose clients. In early decades, commercials conveyed intrinsic benefits of the products.
